Johnny,

Love yer 4-Wheeler!  What a cool crash helmet.  Like the one El Juan should have worn when he landed on his 'haid' mountain-biking to his 'stills in the hills' of Tinny-see.   Teacha Annee, now ain't dat a rahme...?

Missed a few days....I said I was not going to do that.

I get emails from Rex.   Those are neat to receive....and too funny.

Woolworth,

Did any of you sheepherders out there not get their wool's worth...?

Who can forget all the good times at those great five & dime stores... Woolworth and with Kress right next door.

Can anyone guess the make and year of the black 4-door hard-top parked in front of Woolworth?

Make a stab at it.   Could it be a 1965 Chrysler New Yorker?  One stately fine built automobile.

Rex, good eye. A nice design by Elwood Engle. It is surprising that he didn't design suicide doors on the rear as he did on the 60's Lincoln Continentals when at Ford. He also designed the Chrysler Turbine cars. When I was working for Goodyear in the 'early' days, we did the service work on a couple that were on loan to some area doctors. They were pretty cool, but certainly different from the Solar turbines I later did maintenance on.

BTW, is this new change in direction to lead us away from the ROSWELL, NEW MEXICO series with #2 showing last night with hubba-hubba dark haired Jeanine Mason???? que pasa?

El Juan,

The 1991 Mason has sleek lines and very nice design as well.

Te gustan los labios carnosos, los pechos bonitos y las caderas delgadas también... eh?

Speaking of Roswell,  I was leaving the YMCA just down the street from my house here in Oklahoma City, and happened to notice a familiar emblem on an SUV I was parked beside. Had to do a double-take, because it was the gold flying saucer with the word Roswell in the middle. What are the chances?  Small world!

~ 1944 Bennett Jalopy, showing some sights of wear and tear, but still runs.

Could it be the SUV was disguised as a 'mothership' ... which landed in OKC?

Another Classy Chassis - 1944 Bennett(ley) in fine form!   Wouldn't mind taking either for a spin.

1944 Bentley Saloon (Sedan)

A picture of Leo the Lion, cool! On a quiet night in the late 50’s I could hear him roar from my open bedroom window in the family home at 507 N Lea St. Too bad Leo lost the tip of his tail. Rumor has it one of the RHS guys did it. Probably just a rumor though. Hmmm?

02/08/19 11:47 AM #5293

Rex Booth

Yup, the picture was before Leo lost his tail.  I lived near Cahoon Park and could hear Leo's roar during hot summer nights.  Most of the roaring was caused by people teasing Leo. Turley said some thought it was Floyd and Ward whom usta hang out at Cahoon Park... but this 'rumor' was soon dismissed.  Turley said t'was a couple of older local Roswell guys in their middle 20's (he knew) and not flyboys as some may have suspected.  Wonder if that kid ever lost his hands while peering into the cage...

I hope that I don't insult any of the young ladies of our aquaintance...laugh and I think all us dudes look better, even REX!!!

If you're over age  60 (or slightly more) listen to this song.

I thought this was worth sharing. It starts with Toby Keith playing golf with Clint Eastwood. That sets the stage.

At one point, Eastwood said to Keith, “I turn 88 on Monday.”

“What are you going to do?” Keith asked.

“I’m going to shoot a movie,” Eastwood replied, with filming scheduled to begin the following week.

“What keeps you going?” Keith asked him.

“I get up every day and don't let the old man in,” Eastwood said.

“I’m writing this down right now,” Keith replied.

Keith didn't ask him if he could contribute a song, Keith just went home and wrote it, sent it to Clint and hoped that he would consider it. And, he did.    Here it is:

Also wanted to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY to all the Februarians...

02/09/19 11:24 AM #5296

Rex Booth

What's a Februarian?  Is that some sort of 'gopher speak' for predicting weather or the stuff El Juan writes in 'blue' while wearing his fav'rit tin-foil hat...?  Next thing you know he'll be apologizing to Toby for being white...  wink

Central School

It's my understanding from the Historical Society, Central School was built around the late 1890's. It's location was 3rd Street & Kentucky.  It was replaced by a new building (Junior High) in 1927  which  was renamed North Junior High in 1955.  Our new Roswell High school was completed in 1955.  The 'old' high school then became South Jr High the same year.

Maybe one of you guys can help out.  The old school photos reminded me that my mother's first classroom in Roswell was on the East Side somewhere and was, as best I can remember, all Latino students.  She would bring kids home for supper if she felt they were not getting enough to eat.  Old building and very small, maybe 6 classrooms?  This would have been in 1952-53 and she only taught there one year before moving over to Washington Ave.  Any thoughts?

Danny, just a thought...Flora Vista on Atkinson....???

Danny,

Three schools come to mind during the 1953-54 era.

Nancy Lopez Elementary - East Bland

Pecos Elementary – East Hobbs

Carver School – 201 S. Garden ( South of old Horn’s Food & the baseball field. Segregated school for blacks (grades 1-12) until 1954

Mr. A,

Can you add another school which was just east of SE. Main ?

02/13/19 08:01 AM #5302

John Landess

Danny,

Not Flora Vista or Nancy Lopez (one and the same school, corner of East Bland and Atcheson). It opened in 1955, and I was in the 5th and 6th grade there. Lived next door in the Ferguson's trailer park, so it was handy! Also lived there when attending the 7th at South, not so handy, riding there daily on my bike through sketchy parts of town.

Rex, I am sorry that my Elizabethan English lapses cause you such consternation (I don't want to appear to be a contrarian). Also, I'm sorry that blue makes you see red! As to tin foil hats, I never wear them.... they make your hair turn white.... hummmm??
