About all I remember about the Drive-in Movies were how many we could get in the trunk! That also used to be a 'tough guy' check out..what with what was known as a "smoke out", you could only pray the line getting in was short. Once went with George DeShurley and his Dad's big construction flat bed truck. We had about 15 or 20 with lawn chairs going in. Needless to say, that was a buck a 'car' night. The folks that were behind us were not too pleased!

We lived on the street that ran beside the Jingle Bob from 1959 until leaving for Alaska, unfortunately it had closed down by then, so no free movies.

Later, in Alaska there was a Drive In movie in Anchorage (the Sundowner). Shows didn't start in the summers until 10:30 or 11. In the winter, they would rent you a heater that plugged into the speaker pole and hung on the window also. Supposedly kept you from running the car and creating fog. But you still had to once in a while to defrost the windshield.

I hope this finds you well and following the CDC recommendations. After dealing with indoor air quality and environmental microbiology for 45 years the current requirement to stay home a thought occurred to me there is another issue we need to be aware of.  As we isolate ourselves in our homes we are spending a lot of time there that we didn’t before. Even during normal time our houses tend to accumulate all sorts of contaminates such as dust, pollen, cooking fumes, cleaning agents, pet odors, etc.  Normally these generally dissipate while we are out of the house but these days we are home all the time and are even adding other problematic contaminants such as the heavy use of disinfectants and sanitizers.  In a short time the level of contaminants in the home can reach a point that the indoor environment can become stale and start to have some adverse health effects especially to those with asthma, allergies and other respiratory issues.  As you know during our isolation it is recommended that you spend a few minutes outdoor to get some fresh air and sunshine.

So while you are outside getting some fresh air don’t forget the house and leave a few windows open so your house can air out some.  Don’t forget to keep your house healthy!

Remember to FLUSH THE FUNK!

Hang in there! We got this!

I remember being able to go to the drive-in because of the dollar a car price at the ball-o-jack.  My house was north of the starlite and they had a really good 4th fireworks show.                                                                          Mike I was surprised to come across an article that told how your house air was cleaned of most air pollutants by different types of house plants.  My wife has a jungle in one room that I thought was just for beauty until I started looking at those listed in the article. Turns out they clean the air of nearly everything, especially carbon dioxide which we are doubling up on lately.  And because these plants require care and watering, they get the couch potatos off the couch.

John D, that was a good alert from Mike. All those plants you spoke of.... they are not the type that just recently became legal in many states are they??wink

If there are many couch potatoes out there with little to entertain them, drag out your old RHS year books. It is great fun to read the future plans, suppressed desires, and nick names that are listed. Best nickname (so far) goes to Henry Pacheco ('61).

As to the suppressed desires.. Linda W., did you ever get to sing with the Ray Charles Chorus??? I know that you got the teaching dancing down pat!!

Anser for Linda. No she did not get to sing with Ray.

For Dan Cook. Thanks but I am still mad that they took all the good players to East.  I shoudn't say that because we still had some good players but they really did trash SJH Rebs.

During another sleepless night, I ended up on the Smithsonian channel watching a very interesting show called Aerial America. The episode was about New Mexico; all from the air!  Very interesting and made me love my home state even more. There was lots of history associated with each location they visited.

Tommy, you are just upset because most of the good looking ladies also went to East!! And as I have my 1959 EAST-TRONAUT, I got proof!! cheeky

As to the trashing, think how bad it would have been if Mike Truelove had played. As I recall, he was picked up every afternoon and taken to RHS practice??

And a Happy Birthday to Jill Mulroy, also East's Football Queen!

Paula,

I viewed the same New Mexico aerial video as well.  Nicely done!  There are other aerial videos free on YouTube which cover everything from aerial views of the Cascade waterfalls in Washington State to steep Nordic Valleys of Norway to Human Kite Flights over the Matterhorn between Switzerland & Northern Italy.  It's absolutely amazing how quality high definition pictures can be obtained from an inexpensive 150.00 drone equiped with a HD video camera.

Hey Johnny. The Model and Ball & Ray pictures brought back some good memories. I think they were about the only 2 places that sold clothing for the guys back then. Can’t remember if Roswell had a JC Penney or Sears in those days.  I made many trips to both stores to buy stuff during our junior high and high school years in Roswell. I think it was the Fields family that owned the Model and when I went there I always enjoyed shooting the bull with Spencer Fields and his older brother Benny Fields. Spencer was our age and a really nice guy. Don McKenzie’s mother was a seamstress at one of the two, can’t remember which one though. Thanks for posting all those great pictures and sparking the good memories.

Wow Ray, you wuz a member of the E-LEET even before Shell!

I don't know about Penney's, but the Sears store was built out on South Main before Jr. High time. Our neighbor bought a car there, I believe, an Allstate (aka Henry J). We also had a C R Anthony downtown. It was where I had to get shoes (way narrow hoof)... wearing BSA shoes until finally working at the country club let me afford a set of 'bucks'!! They were wide but cool!! (except for the maintenance) Then off to Alaska and muk-luks.

Somebody help me out here.  It seems I remember Sears being next to the Yucca Theater before It moved to South Main

Yes, Sears was on W. 3rd Street. My mom worked there and helped open the new store at 1000 So. Main.

We used to park in the alley and enter the Model and Ball & Ray from there. I also shopped at Anthoney's across the street where Tom Randolph worked (gave us some good deals ) maybe that's why he only worked there  for a short time.

On one of the side streets downtown there was a White Store. Kind of a hardware/appliance place. I got my first deer rifle there, a 'sporterized' British 303. As I recall, I paid 13 dollars for it. AND no background checks!!

In the discussion of all these stores, I looked up one and found that wikipedia has a site of defunct stores and companies. Many of course I never heard of, but it was suprising of how many we grew up with were absorbed by others or just went away.
