Patrick Riley
Rex, I can share some likely non-productive John Deutschendorf information.
John Denver's primary residence was the exclusive Starwood gated community on the slopes surrounding Aspen Colorado (song reference Starwood in Aspen). He lived there with his wife Annie (song reference Annie's Song).
Years ago, I drove up to the Starwood gatehouse, informed the guard I was an old school friend and asking to see John. It didn't work. I, of course, never met John Denver and wasn't an old friend.
FYI, I've tried this at the gatehouses protecting Barbra Streisand (Malibu), Bob Hope (Palm Springs), Lee Trevino (El Paso) and George Strait (San Antonio). None of these worked either.
What was I going to do/say if I had gained admittance at any of these homes? I had no idea; I figured I'd play it by ear.
I was still trying to recover from a failed celebrity encounter opportunity from my college days. The Kingston Trio entertained at UNM's Popejoy Hall my senior year. John Denton and I (and dates) attended. During the concert, a member of the Trio mentioned they were staying at the Western Skies Hotel while in Albuquerque. After we dropped the girls off, John and I decided to pay the Trio a visit. This was past midnight. I approached the night desk clerk and asked, "What room is Nick Reynolds (a Trio member) in?"
"I can't give that information out but can put you through on the house phone," the clerk replied. He did and Nick answered.
"Hi Nick, two big fans here with a bottle of 24-year-old Scotch!" "Sounds good to me," Nick replied, giving me his room number. Now the sad part ... we lost our nerve and never went up ... great opportunity lost. We actually did have the bottle of Scotch.
Years later, a business associate and I saw the New Kingston Trio (not as good as the originals) perform at the Crazy Horse Saloon in Santa Ana, CA. When I got to the ticket window, I was informed they were sold out! I slid a hundred-dollar bill to the ticket seller, asking if there was anything he could do to squeeze two more in.
The Crazy Horse set up a two-top for us literally on stage (on the left side of the stage behind a side curtain). We watched the entire performance just feet from the Trio!
Being on stage, it was easy to meet the Trio afterward. I shook hands with Bob Shane (the only original Trio member in the new group), telling him what a big fan I was. He went out to his car in the parking lot, retrieved a Trio album for me and autographed it. I still have it!
