As per your March 9  post # 7063 regarding what Bill T. posted about floods in Roswell. I seem to recall something to that effect, so  am posting a couple of pictures to see if anyone remembers their parents talking about the "Roswell Flood of 1935"!

Main Street - near 5th -  Conoco Service station on far right. Building is still standing! I belive the building on the near left may be the City Bus Depot.  Other info is welcome!

The administrator will create an "In Memory" obit. All classmates will be notified by the RHS website which will permit classmates to view the obit by selecting "In Memory" on the "Home" page. Thankyou for your cooperation.

RHS 63 member Karen Holstun

Just a note to let you all know that my beautiful wife, your classmate, Karen Holstun Norris passed away peacefully Tuesday March 7th at 2am. I think she planned the time even though she had been on Hospice 3+ days. March 7th was our 56th Wedding Anniversary day, so she made it 2 hours into our special day. She has suffered more than 7 years with a horrible disease called Multiple System Atrophy. May God bless all of you RHS graduates. Tom Norris

Rex, my parents came to Roswell in 1942. They told of flooding that occasionally happened but I don't remember the years. I do know that the homes they built were always on the south end of town so they would be far enough away and upwards of any flooding from the Hondo and Spring rivers. I just remember that those expensive homes along the Spring River were flooded several times. Wasn't the problem fixed upstream somehow?

Paula,

Yes, I remember as a young boy living close to the Spring river and later the Hondo river. Both would create raging waters! Many homes were flooded if they were not elevated by a couple of feet or so. In those days a “concrete slab foundation” was almost unheard of.

A little history on the Two Rivers Dam.

“Two Rivers Dam” is a dry dam sixteen miles southwest of the city of Roswell off Highway 70. The dam is actually two dams separated by an area of higher land. Normally, no water is impounded behind the dams as they are strictly for flood control.

The city of Roswell suffered devastating floods in 1937, 1941, and 1954. After the 1954 flood, Congress passed the Watershed Protection and Flood Prevention Act of 1954 which authorized the Corps of Engineers to build dams to protect Roswell from floods. The dams were completed in 1963.

In 1954 I lived on 10th St right in front of the Spring River half block from Father Bears Den.. In the night someone bang on our door to tell a flood was coming.  Before we could get dressed it hit and in moments we had 3 feet of water in the house  My brother and I held the door to keep it from crashing open.  A truck floated adown and took out a corner of our porch.  I had a house full, My mother, my sister and her three children.  We held that door for four hours.  Then waded out I was scared to death, because I was theonly one in the house

who could swim.  We all waked the the town hall.  They gave my sister 10 dollars to buy milk for the kids

Later when we got back to the house it took hours to shovel it hout.  The floor was warped and all the furniture was ruined.  but  we had no other place to go.  The land lord thought it looked okay so he raise our rent 10 Dollars.

We moved.

In 1954 we lived on Missouri 2nd house northeast of 2nd St. Our Dad owned the "City Sewing Machine Company."
One of the pictures is of me (blonde pigtails) my 2 brothers a friend and our Mom! The other is a picture from Second looking North. I don't know who the people in that picture are.

My dad was one of the workers that built the twin dams.  He took me out there to see it right before the ribbon cutting.  It has an opening that has no floodgate so it can never be used as a lake, but will not allow enough water to flood.  He said he had to wait on the highway west of Roswell for  over a day because the draw west of 6 mile hill had the highway flooded(1930's).   Question, is the system making liars out of all of us.  I had to answer about whether I had been exposed to covid on a call for dr. appt.  No one can truthfully answer yes or no unless they have not had contact with anyone for at least 10 years.  Even if you stay home, you still have mail and food from either the grocery store or delivered fast food.  If you go out you have no idea how many people you come close to who have not yet become sick but are now contagious.  They don't accept I don' know as an answer, only yes or no.. I am now going to answer DIIKDY(darnded if I know do you)

Don, I have always answered no. Problem Solved!

I think unless you know for sure and have had a test saying
yes, the answer is no. My opinion, I think most Dr. don't really care
they have to ask because of some governmental fat cat.

I haven't had a Doctor ask me that Question in a while!!

I think it was "What the f**k Brutus?"

Shakespeare cleaned it up a bit due to strict censorship policies at the Globe Theatre in 1599.

Pat,

I must commend thee... refraining from using the 'expletive'... four letter word. By using only two letters and couple of stars... it must have been very challenging!

What Caesar actually said according to Shakesperian believers was: "Et Tu Brute' "  (And You Too, Brutus???)   Caesar must have had heavy of heart knowing his protege Brutus turned on him.

Fred,

I would be honored... You being  the "Front Man"!!!

Who are some guests you'd like to invite on our Too-nite Show?  Maybe we could dig up some celebs like Dom DeLuise, Carole Burnett, Kirk Douglas, Juliette Binoche...  What names would our Classmates recommend for "Ed McMahon" Fred's  lineup?

Sooooo... "Let the good times roll"!

Rex, the only good thing I remember about et tu was that I passed latin with a D---.  Ithink I spent to much time looking at mother Merkle and not at what was on the blackboard.   Could not understand why all the other  languages seemed written backwards.  Everyone I would  like to see is either dead or older than us and dying.

Yup, Latin was used by the Roman Catholic church to keep the flock mystified.  The elitists in the middle ages were the only ones who could afford obtaining a higher education in colleges or seminaries.  Those in power used Latin to communicate with each other leaving the peasants in the dark. Another interesting observation: Latin is the core of romantic languages, hence... French, Spanish, and Eye-talion...

Comedian Brother Dave Gardner tells a "Southern' short story" about Julius Caesar.

Brutus walks into the room...

Caesar say: "Et tu, Brute' ?

Brutus say: "No man, I dun et"!
