Mari and I were close friends at North Junior High School and beyond.  I spent a lot of time at her house and had dinner there from time to time and attended their holiday party one year.  Her mom gave me a high school graduation present.  Her dad gave me a job at Hondo Oil and Gas as a draftsperson updating plat maps of oil wells indicating the operational status and ownership of each well; this was during the summer after high school graduation, before I left for college.  After junior high, Mari attended a private school back East so wasn't much involved in Roswell High School life.  We talked from time to time after college.  She was plagued by mental illness (schizophrenia, it seemed) as an adult and resisted treatment (she was quite delusional), so that was a tragedy and made continued contact difficult.  I remember her well as a wiry little pubescent teenager, bouncing away on their trampoline.  I loved Mari and was sad when she died.  Still am.  We shared a sense of humor, a big bonding factor in junior high.  Her mental health struggles were terrible for her brothers and sisters, who tried to help her, but her paranoia was a barrier.  Her struggles were heartbreaking for me too.  She had become close to Ronnie Lamb (I introduced them), and her struggles took a toll on him as well.  broken heart

(She lived in Alaska, by the way, because she married a guy who had been a ski instructor in Colorado--her dad developed Aspen, so that may have been where they met.  That marriage broke up but they did have kids.)

Charlene, to hear of Mari's mental illness struggles saddened me. Those kind of struggles are so very difficult on family and friends. Life is just difficult sometimes but what a blessing that she had you as a friend.

Paula, I couldn't be much of a blessing to her once she started showing full-blown symptoms, unfortunately.  Mental health challenges are so tough.

I did love her dearly.

Thanks to all the stories about the Andersons.
I have Learned a Lot.
I knew of them and knew they were really down
to earth people!
But that was about all.
knew some of the stories shared here.
There is a museum here in Roswell that
is the Anderson Museum. I have put off going,
I think it is time I explore it.
I live in a seniors appartment complex built by
one of the Andersons, I think a brother, in 2007.
He owned all the property around this area.
They also have a community here that help
"Starving Artist's".

Donald Anderson (a serious painter himself) started that museum, and it's wonderful, Sherry.  Go.  The Roswell Artist-in-Residence program is also an amazing gift.

Robert O's brother, Donald, built The Henge on his property out east of town. A very interesting sculpture.

I recall visiting someone (Lyle York maybe) who lived across the river from the henge of the Andersons.  They recalled seeing the kids making a movie there using the henge as a castle as they were dressed in armor as medieval knights

I had an old , eccentric and alcoholic,  granduncle who sold his ranch to the Andersons.  It did not go well.  They would tell him all sorts of things he had to do for the sale.  He would say he did not have to do anything and he did not even have to sell.  He did end up selling.

Some of you likely remember the Robert O. Anderson family home, a moderately large two-story red brick structure on north Pennsylvania, Kentucky or nearby street. Frequently parked beside it was a 1950 yellow Chevrolet convertible.

That was Robert O's personal car, which he drove whenever he was in Roswell. He could obviously afford newer and better but that old Chevy was his vehicle of choice.

His son, Robert Bruce Anderson, and I both liked the same Roswell girl. I could take her to the movies; young Robert could and did take her by private jet to Hawaii and Aspen. This didn't end like the movies where the "po boy" prevails!

I dated Mari a few times the summer after my soph year. She was home for a few weeks and some young lady set us up. I went to get her and we walked to my car and the battery was dead. Mr Anderson came out and gave me keys to his Mercedes and told me we would take care of my car after the show. When we got back to the house I had a new battery. After each date the maid had treats for us. Mari was a real sweet girl. And yes I said the Mercedes. He didn't trust me with his yellow convertible.

We came to visit in Roswell in 1980 when a big storm dumped over 25" of snow. We had to stay a couple of extra days. And because we were not on the road home, I got to watch the Wimbledom mens finals. Bjorn Borg vs. John McEnroe. One of the greatest matches I have ever seen.

Rex, great film clips in the Chuck Berry piece ... thanks for posting!

Thanks Pat!
My pleasure. Whoever put those film clips together should get a GoldenGlobe if not an Oscar for capturing the essence of those years.

John L,

I remember that snow storm of 60-61 well... was a big one for sure. Something like 2-3 feet. We had one about 5 years ago which dumped 5-8 feet over a period of constant snow for three days around 10 degrees. Many cattle ranches were affected losing stock and the milk farms suffered more losing a large percentage of their milk cows. It put a lot of smaller guys out on the street. That snow storm was called "Goliath". For those who know who Little David was... you get the drift.  Just ask Brother Dave....

Yeah Fred,

Always love to watch Bjorn Borg in action!  A true sportsman unlike the spoiled brat tantrums thrown by Connors and McEnroe. Those were the days when we were hitting our prime and were out on the tennis courts learning to put English on the ball. Sometimes you had to 'talk' to your racket to get the ball across the net...

Rex,

I know who Goliath and David wuz.... I got the "drift"!!!!!

Now wuz that an accidental pun or what?

03/02/24 11:03 AM #7689

Rex Booth

Accidental, occidental, or oxy-dental, it still 'bees' a pun.

Remember now, all y'all,  Li'l David was the first to invent  "Rock ' Roll" !!

That's right!   Li'l David rocked Goliath, then he rolled him... by relieving the giant of his coin purse...

The KSWS-TV tower fell during an ice storm Dec. 1960 during a Perry Mason episode.
Per my brother Chuck " it is the only case he didn't win".
