Another movie filmed at a beautiful hotel is "Somewhere in Time". It is a chick flick, but I do love this movie. Stars Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeve and Christopher Plummer. It is filmed at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, MI.
I agree with Paula. I liked this 'chick flick' and loved the mystical chance of going back in time. I enjoyed the scenery, the time period clothes, the love scenes, and especially the soundtrack!!
The soundtrack on the film's original musical score was composed and conducted by John Barry, who was suggested by Jane Seymour, a personal friend. The producers had been considering a score based on the 18th variation of Sergei Rachmaninoff's "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini," which is used in the film several times.
Rex, re Amazon's AWS, I'm not subscribed to a specific tier but rather what Amazon calls "Amazon S3 Intelligent-Tiering". It adjusts my performance as needed and bills accordingly. I think this plan requires a decent spend. My Amazon AWS bill averages about $1,900 a month broken out roughly as follows:
Storage: $1,300
Computing: $500
Data Transfers: $100
I additionally spend about $500 a month with Cloudflare for Content Delivery Network (CDN) services, which I previously purchased from Amazon. This makes my monthly Amazon bill somewhat lower now than it once was. I prefer Cloudflare's functionality and dashboard over Amazon's.
Also, I spend about $250 a month with SendGrid for Email services. This is another function I moved from Amazon AWS to a third party ... again I preferred their functionality and cost over Amazon.
I'm obviously consuming cloud services at a rate few individuals would ... most of the above spend is in support of my home-based consulting business.
To your point ... confusing? Yes. I Emailed you a copy of my detailed Amazon AWS bill for last month ... 6 pages.
PS - Apologies to all classmates besides Rex; I'm sure this is a very dull read for most.
I've lived in Michigan now for 46 years and have been able to visit Mackinac Island several times and the hotel where Somewhere In Time was filmed. They have reenactments of the movie at the Grand Hotel and the guests all dress in clothes from that period. it is spectacular. I have always loved that movie.
I and my wife watched the Notebook and it was our first tear-jerker together. I am not into musicals, but she is. Do you remember the first movie you went to by yourself? I was 6 and we lived on the ranch and I had just started riding the schoolbus. My folks needed to come to town so they had me go to the show after school in the big city of Tatum. The show was the original The day the world stood still. Very scary for my age since I knew about the crashlanding by Roswell.
The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island also offers 'Carriage Tours" drawn with Hackney Horses. Would round out an elegant dinner with a romantic evening ride.
It is my understanding that at the time "Somewhere in Time" was filmed, no automobiles were allowed on Mackinac Island. They had to get special approval to bring the cars in the movie onto the island.
Back in the late 50's, I had a paper route. After school every day, I would ride my bike up 5th St. to the Record at 5th and Main to get my papers.
One day, as I rode past the soda shop in the Nickson Hotel, I glanced in the window. I saw 2 men, one holding a woman, and the other pointing knife at her chest. I went around the corner, parked my bike, and snuck back to peek in the window. The guy with the knife was slowly popping the buttons off of the woman's blouse.
I hopped back on my bike and drove the ½ block up to the Record. I ran in and said we need to call someone. Something bad is happening at the hotel soda shop. Everybody started laughing and said, look at the paper. They are making a movie here in Roswell. And that is what I saw.
The movie was called "Date with Death". It starred George Mohr. There are a few recognizable Roswell sites in the movie. Not a bad movie.
Below is a link to the movie. The part I saw through the window starts at 21:10 into the movie and lasts for about a minute.
The 1959 movie brought back old memories of Roswell. It’s one of those “B” movies of the ‘50’s. Being in black & white was about the only redeeming factor.
It was great to see those "Santa Fe" railway box cars with "Chief"on the sides. There were scenes of Chaves County Courthouse, Nickson Hotel, the Country Club with the Peter Hurd mural behind the bar, and the car going over the cliff above (Lea Lake?)
Cal,
In the first part of the movie there were two motorcycle cops who escorted George Mohr to the courthouse… which one do you think could have been Wheeler…?
The 'first movie' I remember was at the "Pecos" (Old Princess Theatre) 300 block of North Main. It was an early 1940’s movie “The Outlaw” starring Jack Buetel as Billy the Kid and Howards Hughes’s girl-friend Jane Russell as ‘Rio’. I was five years old. The marque out front must have left an indelible impression on me.
You are right, the movie marquee was misleading. It probably led me down the wrong road as well... I've read the original marquee of Jane Russell was not approved by the movie censors. It took several attempts by Howard Hughes before one was OK'd. The morality cops were afraid the picture marquee exposed at the theatre entrance would cause six year old boy's eyes to bulge out of their head (permanently), hair to grow in the palms of their hands, and cause curvature of the spine...
What was the name of the theatre right across the street from the Pecos?
Rex, I didn,t remember the Pecos until you mentioned it. My folks took me to see Francis the talking mule one time and Ma and Pa Kettle when I was 4or 5. I don't remember ever going there after we moved to town and don't remember one across the street. Does anyone know when it closed? My mom wouldn't have allowed us past the poster at that time.
Rex, Don't believe there was a theater across from the Pecos theater. But there was across from the Plains theater. the name will come to me about 3:00A some morning and wake me up...
Yes, the movie theatre across the street from the "Pecos" was the "El Capitan" 314 N. Main. It was called "Capitan Theatre" and had 500 seats. "Capitan" was built in 1925 and closed doors in 1950. The owner was Civic Theater in Los Angeles.
The Pecos closed shortly thereafter because the Plains and Yucca Theatres were had 1000 -1500 seats each... more modern and comfortable.
There was another movie theatre on the 'south-east side' of Main street just a few doors down and across the street from the Plains theatre that Fred mentioned. Anyone recall its name?
OK guys no charge for this info. The Chavez was directly across the street from the Plains. Showed mostly Mexican movies. On the same side next to Zinks was the Capitol Theater. Was a 10cent theater usually showing double features ( usually scary shows) plus a cartoon and news serials. This was the only one I could afford.
Rex, I had to cheat and go to my good friend Google.
The Pecos was the only theater in the 300 block of N. Main. The Capitan was across from the Plains theater. And the Chief was in the 400 block across from the courthouse.
Below is the 1st paragraph of an RDR article about the old theaters in Roswell.
