I am a little late in posting and don't do it often but must reply to Tommy's post.  I love our old music.  As new songs come out and today the grands know all the words I can't. I have some I try to remember the words to but I was listening just last week to a station that played all old songs from our time.  I knew all the words to 95% of them.  They were worth remembering I guess.  Long term memory is much better than short term.  And yes getting old is no fun- but I am still in denial that I am old. 😀.  Hope everyone is doing good  I do read all your "stories"   Just find it hard to have time to get on here much   Have to take care of Grant and get him to Drs appt usually a couple of times a week   Anyway I very much appreciate the upbringing in Roswell

Patricia,

I am glad you came back to visit with us. I do agree, we had the best music in the '40's, 50's, and 60's era (including some from the 70's and 80's). As a young lad, I grew up listening to old '78 records of my folks and developed an appreciation for Big Band music. Music by Tommy Dorsey, Glen Miller, and Benny Goodman to name a few. I firmly beleive we should continue listening to music we enjoyed during the formative years of our youth.

Classmates, do you have any special requests for songs to be played here? You can post songs that are your favorites!  We could tally up the most posts for the Top Ten!!

One of my all time favorites from 1940 was Benny Goodman Orchestra performing hot jazz in "Sing, Sing, Sing"  Head liners include Harry James (trumpet) and Gene Krupa (drums). Go get 'em Gene!

My Dad played drums in a small band while he was attending Carroll College in Wisconsin.  He had a friend, Les Paul, who sometimes played with the band.  My Dad and Les Paul grew up together  in Waukesha, WI.

Les Paul performed with his wife, Mary Ford.  One of my favorite songs..."How High the Moon".

Ah Yes!  Mary Ford, Les Paul, and Peggy Lee.  How bout Peggy singing "Fever". I understand "fever" became a malady which affected millions of young lasses known simply as "Peggy's Fever"...

Laying all kidding aside, "Fever" was first recorded two years earlier by Little Willie John in 1956 when he was 17 years old. "Fever" became the #1 "Rhythm & Blues" song that same year.

Clint Eastwood was age 88 when he directed and starred in the "Mule"

Toby Keith wrote this song based on a conversation he had with Clint Eastwood who said: "Don't let the old man in..."

Rex, your post #8395 reminded me of when some of us, usually the Manghams and Harry Atkinson, would ride our bikes out east of town to Red Bridge Rd to the bridge over the Hondo river.  It was deep enough we could dive off the bridge into the river.

Fred,

Yeah Man! That was one long ride out to Red Bridge Road overpass at Hondo River! Did you take N. Atkinson to College then east? After all that peddlin' 'n swimimin', bet you were ready to crash when you got back home!  Johnny Allensworth and I went fishing at Red Bridge Rd. which  crosses the Berrendo River north of 19th. Johnny caught a bass and a rainbow trout. I came in second place... reeled in a pretty good-sized minnow...

Remember when we had the big flood in '54 or was it '56?  A few of us went out west 4th street past Cahoon park to swim Spring River.  Those hot summer days when we'd play baseball on a sand lot, a dust storm blew in, then it rained cats and dogs! Ten minutes later after that scorching sun came back out... we played on dry clay and finished our game.  Parting of the Red Sea doesn't hold a candle next to them-thar Roswell miracles!

What were you doing 10 years later in 1972...?

If I understand correctly, you are asking where
we were in 1972.
I was in Altus, Oklahoma with 4 children,
Husband was in Viet Nam.
He came back in the Fall and we moved to
Ellsworth Air Force Base South Dakota for 5 Years.

Here is a up date on the condition of Roswell
since all the rain. this was as of about 10 Am
June 25, 2025! FYI

With more rain in Roswell Tuesday night (June 24) and Wednesday morning (June 25), flooding and related impacts have caused the closure of the following city roads:
- Canoncito Drive between Riverside Drive and West Fourth Street is closed.
- The area around the intersection of Montana Avenue and West Fourth Street is closed.
- The intersection of North Kentucky Avenue and West Sixth Street is closed.
- The bridge on East Mescalero Road just east of Urton Road and north of the Roswell Country Club is closed.
***Additional closures will be added to this post if they occur. As roads are reopened, they will be removed from the list in this post.***
Please do not go around any traffic barriers on these or any other streets that are closed.
In addition, the Roswell Municipal Landfill is closed Wednesday because of the overnight rain making the landfill roads unsafe for general traffic. The road conditions were reassessed around noon and it was determined the landfill will have to remain closed until Thursday morning to ensure the roads are safe for the public.

Saw the Doobies in Albq. with Billy Ward. I did not know what a Doobie was until Billy introduced me to one. I preferred beer over a Doobie.

The rain was great. Sorry for the problems it caused some but it was nothing like the flood we had.

1972 - I had been in Sherman, TX for 2 years by then as manager of Commercial Credit Corp., a  large, nationwide finance company.  The following year, I would get a phone call out of the blue from the president of Grayson Bank with an offer I could not turn down.  Shortly after meeting with him, I would begin my 34 year career in banking...

"He made you an offer you couldn't refuse..."   ~ Vito Corleone

Vito, thank you for inviting me to your beautiful daughter's wedding..

Sorry to hear about the flooding problems there in Roswell...

Roswell had a pretty good rain Sunday afternoon & evening. Monday morning drove up north Main... no flooding at Convention Center nor Art Museum.  Spring river flowing 6-8 feet in different areas.  Continued up to Wally World to pick up a few groceries. On the way back, Berrendo River was at about 6-8 feet and flowing heavier than Spring River.  Had a slow steady rain Tuesday evening till Wednesday am. Drove around the homes on 4th Street in Cahoon Park. Followed Spring river over to Kentucky and 8th. Everyone was high and dry along Spring river.. Only reason 4th and Montana was still closed t'was the City personell hadn't removed the barricades yet. The sun came out in its radiant shining glory about 11 this morning. Everything is nice and green and the air smells soooooo good!  This is our first real good rain since last October.  This is a free public service announcement (minus the 'prophet of doom' news media).... Hal-la-loo-yah!!
