For some strange inexplicable reason... no one from South Jr. has responded to the picture posted on the Home Page... yet?  Which gives pause to a theory, could those South Jr. classmates been abducted by the Mother Ship... ?

I believe some South Jr. classmates were Charlotte Adams, Ann Stockton, Kay Price, Linda Ingram, Martha Key, Marilyn Hill, Jan Williams, Sherry Faust, and a bevy of other sweeties.  Some guys were Sanford Green, Mack Kiser, Bill Turley (7-8th), Johnny Allensworth (7-8th),  and T-Texas Tom aka Tommy Weathers.

Hey, all y'all Suthun' Rebels... loosen up yer fangers and start bangin' on yer keyboard!!

Rex I was one of the south students.  I went in the 7th and 8th with tthe 9th being sent to east.  I played keep marbles on most of the yard.  During my 8th grade year, Miss Maloney became Mrs. Haliburton.  I remember having music class in the   basement, don't remember who the teacher was.  Would sneak off during lunch and check out the Hondo "river".  Found lots of discarded items, including the ocassional drunk wino playing his guitar.  Birthday wishes to all who are or have already reached the 3/4 century mark with Johnny and I.

I was a South student, 7-9th and proud of it!!!  Loved the science teacher but can’t remember his name. Come on you South people, speak up!

Went to South 7 -9th.  All those names bring back memories.  I remember Mr. Hodges for home room English.  I think he got in some trouble later with boys.  I think the science teacher who I did like was maybe named Wilson.  Had the beautiful Mrs. Green for something.  Had. Teacher called Mackie for  history. She also had the drama club.  She lived with the art teacher across the street.  Liked them both. Had ms. Blackman for an English class and Mr. Ware for math.  Remember Randy Fortenberry who moved to Seattle afterward.  They had the first VW bug I Saw.  Would often go to the Dairy Queen or the bakery for after lunch dessert with Joe Wicker and Tom Parsons.

Remember PE with my locker next to a guy named Camelio Samario..  A tough and muscular guy.  He was older than the rest of us.  I got along with him as I would help roll up his t-shirt sleeves so they were even and he could put his pack of cigarettes in there just so.  The showers were cold. If you felt hot water it would be Camelio peeing on you while laughing.  He did not do it to me, but did to others.  He has long ago passed away and I think he spent time in jail.

My dad told me that sometime back in his day when it was high school some kids took a large wagon apart and put it back together upstairs.  They may have taken a cow up there too.

Lots of memories and lots forgotten.

WOW! Joe your brain is in much better shape than mine!!! I cannot remember a single teachers name from my 7th at South. Mostly what I do remember was that was the first school I ever attended where you changed classes, and it seemed that every one of mine alternated from one floor to another, so I was always rushing. Jimmy Blakely went there, as well as Betsy Palmer. I think Joe Garcia?? also. Sorry, I was so worried about being stuffed in a locker or de-pantsed, like I had heard of, that I must have blocked it all out! Of course, having to ride my bike on Bland from Atkinson and back may just have worn me down. I do remember some sock dancing in the gym, and wishing I had a clue!frown

I remember Ms. Almy teaching us how to pronounce “mischievous” ( without adding an extra “i”)  in the 7th? 8th? grade and Ms. Wickstrom teaching us the Rime of the Ancient Mariner in the 9th grade. ( I think there was lots of extra credit for memorization of that one.) I also remember another teacher teaching us how to write checks. And I think the chorus got to go to the state contest in Carlsbad. Big fun!

I always looked forward to “noontime activities” in the cafeteria where we danced to the current tunes. I think I also remember getting a sugar cube with a drop of polio vaccine on it at some point in that same cafeteria. That is also where I accidentally threw away my retainer when I cleared my lunch tray. No more straight teeth for me!

Guess I'll help out the Rebels, I went to South in the 7th grade, LFD in the 8th and East in the 9th.  I remember the Math teacher, Mr. Ware.  I always thought he was the meanest teacher ever, after he grabbed me by the neck and put my head in the trash, and all I was doing was chewing gum.  I think he wanted me to spit it out, Ha.  Had Mrs. Haliburton for something, and Coach Armstrong and Dunning for PE.  Had fun with Billy Turley, Jim Valdez, Paul Butler, and I think Dana Jennings went there also.

Guess I might as well throw in my 2 cents worth of memories about South.  The science teachers name a few have referenced name was Williams.  He was a pretty good guy and made his science class a little fun.  He also helped coach football.  He wasn;t any fun there!  Coach Dunning became a lifelong friend of mine and we use to ski togather a lot in the 60s and 70s.  In the 8th grade he came into the locker room after P E and got there Right at the end of a fight with Colman Sutton and me.  He took us to the office where Coach and Morris Hinman decided we needed a few licks and produced a wood paddle about 3' long.  I was a little nervous about the situation cause I had never been to the office before.  Ol Colman was use to this and a whole lot more relaxed.  Colman already had a cigarette habit in the 8th grade and had his ciggs rolled up in his sleeve.  Sweede waved the board around a little and asked who wanted to go first.  I was so scared I couldn't talk so Colman said he would go 1st .  Coach told him to bend over and grab his ankles. He drew back and hit him with a killing blow.  Smoke and fire shot out of Colmans pants and I don't ever remember being more scared.  Colman may have his ciggs in his shirt sleeve but he he had a penny box of matches in his back pocket that exploded  on impact.  I imagine it scared Hinman and Dunning about as much as it did me.  Can you imagine the stink something like this would stir up now?  MK

John, Jack Hankins went there also.  He lived a block from me at  Atkinson and McGaffey  I also rode my bike to school and down in the Hondo, was sure I could outrun any winos in there on it.

Yes, Mr. Williams was the science teacher I really liked. I do remember that I learned to diagram sentences in 7th grade; maybe we ought to reintroduce that concept!  Also made an “F” in English one six weeks!  Whew!!! That never happened again. I took Algebra from Mrs ???  Her breathe was horrible but she was a great teacher. Merle Scott also went to South; we were good friends. Thanks for all the memories this has brought forth !!

I went to South also. First school in Roswell. Hung out with Randy Fortenberry. He taught me to dance. We practiced a lot upstairs at church. I remember being in trouble for that. Lol. Loved having a bunch piling in Randy’s VW. What fun but I think I would not have wanted my own kids to do that. It would be a big no no now anyway. Was he the only one with a car?   I liked all my teachers at South. Particularly algebra and English and  choir too. Never cared too much for history no matter who the teacher was. Like to go see but not read about it and my dad taught it and loved it. I did have him in 7th grade and thought he was a good teacher.    The first person I dated was Tommy Parsons.   Being the new kid on the block I didn’t know he was Bubbles boyfriend. Oops. Thank goodness Bubbles and I became friends in spite of that.  That was a good year for me and have so many life long friends from Roswell.

Ah yes, Mr. Ware.  There was turmoil in his class. He taught math and I had him for study hall

I was reading a novel in study hall rather than working on math.  This bothered him greatly.  It was worse when I explained that I would go home to have my mom explain the math to me ( she was a trained teacher).  He had something against the Montano sisters in the class who ran out of class one day with him n hot pursuit.  Do not remember the outcome of that.  He was a really crabby guy.  Was a fraternity brother to his son Dale who visited with me years later at our home in Farmington.

Er.  Mrs. Alme was very nice, but naive.  She would give extra credit for picking up trash in her room.  You could tear paper from your notebook to show her that you picked up paper.  I do remember her telling us how to remember how to spell Connecticut.  Think of a child holding up to pieces of twine and saying “connect I cut”.

Strange what memories come back.

Charline...ditto!! Too bad I was a traveler and 'bashful'. How much I missed.

Of course, riding a bike left a lot to be desired! (no VWs)  Fortunately??? unlike John D. I could stay on surface streets, most of the time (no winos).

BTW, at newsletter@alumniclass.com Mike Ingram has posted a photo of him sporting a medal in D.C.  Anyone have any info on that?

Also, another BTW!! All you Augustoids...HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

I attended South Junior High in 7th, 8th and 9th grade.  The only teacher I remember from that time is Ms. Green my 8th grade english teacher.  She was a young (likely new) teacher with bright red hair.  I learned how to put two words together and make a correct sentence.  Something that is lacking in todays education.

Paula Carl,  Your algebra teachers name was Mrs. Ackerman.  She was one of the nicest teachers ever.  Suprised no one has mentioned Miss Farr.  She was only there for 1 yearbut was really nice.  Long blond hair and beautiful.  She had some problems with some boys in her class with big imaginations.  They got in trouble and is probably why she didn't come back the next year.  Mr Steed tought drivers ED and was a super nice guy.  Tommy Weathers  Mike Fowler and I drove togather.  We could all drive really good so we got to go wherever we wanted.  got our drivers lisc, 1st semester.  Barney got his D L in the 8th grade  and had a car in 9th.  It was one of those big ol giant Mercuarys that looked like a big boat.  I can't believe some of those girls parents let them go out cruising that young.  mk

I saw him he saw me, we went back in the restaurant and chatted and laughed for 45 minutes to hour. I apologized to him. And life goes on. He was a salesman for Fireman fund.

Joe:  I have exactly the same memory about Mrs. Alme's class and think about it to this day if I have to Connecticut.  She might have been a little too nice but I did learn a lot from her.

Mike:  I had Mrs. Green the first year she taught at South, what a knock-out!  My memory of her class was one day Jack Denny was cleaning his fingernails with a 10" switch-blade knife in class and when she came to his desk to confiscate it he held it up to her face and called her a peckerwood.  She lived just up to the street from me and she informed my Mom of what had happened since she knew Jack and I were friends, not good!
