Happy birthday to all the mr and mrs clausses.  We had a very good thanksgiving, small and close to home.  We wish a very merry Christmas and happy new year to all.  With luck maybe some will get vacinated against covid in the near future and only worry about diseases like cancer.

Bill Leggett

William H “Bill” Luck was born in Amarillo Texas May 29, 1943 to Jason and Nelle Luck. He passed away December 3, 2020 of Natural causes. Bill grew up in Herford TX where he played on his Grandfathers farm. He moved to Roswell when he was in third grade. Bill would often tell stories of working construction with his father. Together Bill and his father would travel at the drop of a hat to complete a job or start a project. He attended South Junior High where he met Diana Wakefield and began what would soon turn into 60 plus years together. Bill graduated from Roswell High School in 1962. He enlisted in the New Mexico National Guard and began his life with Diana. Bill and Diana moved from Roswell to Portales for Diana to go to school. Bill worked a variety of jobs while trying to find his niche. Along the way it was evident he had a gift for working in the outdoors and with people. Bill loved doing anything that would put him outside, working with his hands, and with animals. He started hauling livestock in Portales and then began “Bill Luck Trucking” once they moved to Roswell. He owned and operated his business until the late 80’s. He worked for Rowell Wool and Mohair continuing to foster his relationships with New Mexican ranching families. Bill then moved his services over to the Wooten family and Roswell Livestock Auction. While working for RLA Bill continued to make life-long friends and help his family achieve their goals. For the last 14 years Bill worked for the Chaves County Road Department. Bill was never one to let time waste. He would get up early and go to bed late if that is what it took to get the job done. He never met a stranger and you always knew where you stood with him. Bill’s word was his bond and everyone that spent any time around him knew that. In recent years he loved watching his grandkids play whatever sport they were playing at the time. He also enjoyed going to Friday night football games and setting with his “top row” buddies.

Surviving Bill is his wife of 57 years Diana, His daughter Kendra Riggs (Jason) of Artesia, son Brian (Shelby) of Roswell, Brother in Law Danny Starling of San Antonio, TX, Sister in Laws Jane Darnell of Lubbock, Sandy Payne (Doug) of Denver City TX, and Margaret Teague of Roswell.   Papa Willie had a special place in his heart for his grandchildren. Hailey Riggs of Artesia, Lexie Riggs of Artesia (Hunter), Addycen Luck and Ayden Luck both of Roswell. Also surviving Bill are his nieces and nephews Brent Luck (Melissa), Rynnea Wright (Max) , Kevin Luck (Janice), Pride Goodloe (Mike) , Valerie Scott (David), Shawn Madden (Amanda), TJ Starling (Karri) and Jeff Teague (Angel). He is also survived by childhood friend John Madden and special cousins and friends.

Proceeding Bill in death are his parents Nelle and Jason. His brother Jerry, Sister Mary, Sister in Law Drusilla, and In-laws Milton and Otero Wakefield who loved him as if he was their son.

Serving as pallbearers for Bill will be Jason Riggs, Vance Riggs, Hunter Dobbins, BJ Jones, and Smiley Wooten. Honorary pallbearers will be the Chaves County Road Crew. A thank you to Dr. Araujo-Mino, Dr. Dake, and his doctors at MD Anderson, and a special thank you to Dr. Glitza.   Memorial contributions may be made to Jessie and Mike Memorial Scholarship PO Box 2465 Roswell, NM 88202.

Visitation for Bill will be Monday evening from 5:00-6:00 at LaGrone Funeral home. Services for Bill will be Tuesday morning December 8th at Bethel Baptist Church 11:00 am with grave side to follow at South Park Cemetery.

Obituary for Sharon Jean McDonald (Chewning)

On Saturday, December 5th, Sharon Jean McDonald (Chewning), passed away at the age of 76. Please take a moment and share a kind thought or memory with Sharon’s family at www.andersonbethany.com.

Sharon was born on March 15, 1944, in Roswell, NM to Henry Chewning and Margie Chewning (Lacey). She graduated Class of 1962 from Roswell High School and went on to become an EMT and Respiratory Therapist. She married Michael Lawrence and raised her two children, David and Kelly, in her hometown of Roswell. Sharon participated in all aspects of her children’s life including serving as a board member of the Roswell Little League Football, keeping official score and running concessions for Styles Baseball Field, and was an active member of the PTA.

At age 40, Sharon was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy and decided to devote her strongest years to the Chaves County Casa Program. For her profound work of advocating for abused and neglected children, Sharon was chosen to be President Bush’s 462nd Point of Light. She flew to Washington where she received this prestigious honor directly from President Bush in the White House. Sharon’s work had an everlasting effect on many children’s lives. Sharon was a devout grandmother to her grandchildren attending every sports game, dance recital, swim lesson, and school function. She took great pride in maintaining her home and garden. And she loved to watch Jeopardy!

In her later years, Sharon rekindled her love with her High School sweetheart, Dennis McDonald. They were married on September 26, 2001, and resided in Colorado Springs, Colorado for nine years. They moved back to Roswell to retire and be closer to family. Sharon stayed devoted to her family, loved her dogs Seamus and Shotzi, and enjoyed being on her back patio with music, family, and friends.

This Bridge Across, by Christopher Gilbert

A moment comes to me
and it’s a lot like the dead
who get in the way sometimes
hanging around, with their ranks
growing bigger by the second
and the game of tag they play
claiming whoever happens by.
I try to put them off
but the space between us
is like a country growing closer
which has a language I know
more and more of me is
growing up inside of, and
the clincher is the nothing
for me to do inside here
except to face my dead
as the spirits they are,
find the parts of me in them—
call them back with my words.
Ancestor worship or prayer?
It’s a kind of getting by—
an extension of living
beyond my self my people taught me,
and each moment is a boundary
I will throw this bridge across.

Fred Miller

I was really sorry to hear of Steve Wolf passing. He was the kind of person who never met a stranger. He would go out of his way to help others. I was a recipient of that help when I mentioned one time 4 or 5 years ago that my yearbook for 1962 had been destroyed. He contacted me and said he had an extra copy, and wanted my address. A few days later, I received a package in the mail. In it was a never been opened copy of our yearbook.

That is how I remember Stephen Wolfe.

Tribute

Stephen Bradley Wolfe, Sr. (August 6, 1944 to December 6, 2020)

Stephen Bradley Wolfe was born on August 6, 1944 in Woodward, Oklahoma.  He was the son of Helen Louise (Dockerty) Wolfe and B. E. (Bill) Wolfe, who was a B-24 pilot in the Pacific at the time. After WWII, the Wolfe family moved to Hereford, Texas and later to Roswell, NM, where Bill started an irrigation contracting business.  B. E. Wolfe died in July 2001 and Helen in June 2006.

After his active-duty military time, Steve met his wife of 48 years, Gwendolyn Thomas, who survives him.  They were married on July 31, 1972 at the First United Methodist Church of Roswell.   The couple had three children, all of whom survive him.  Dr. Stacia Lusby and her husband, James, reside and practice medicine in Amarillo, Texas.  Stephanie Schels and her husband, Jeff. live in Belton, Texas, where she taught school and he is a Chiropractic Physician.   Stephen Bradley Wolfe, Jr. (Brad) and his wife Rachel live and work in Washington, D.C.   Steve has six grandsons, Luke, Lincoln, Landon, and Levi Lusby of Amarillo, Cooper Schels of Belton and Casper Wolfe of Alexandria, VA. He has three granddaughters, Adeliene (Addie) Lou and Poppy Belle Wolfe of Alexandria, VA, and Taylor Schels of Belton, Texas.

Wolfe is also survived by his brother, John Leslie Wolfe and wife Brenna, of Bowie, Maryland, and by his sister Jennifer Lynn Wolfe, of Roswell, and their families.

Steve attended school in Roswell, graduating from Roswell High School in 1962 and he maintained close bonds with many of his high school friends his entire life.  It was during his high school years that Steve began a love of choral music which lasted all of his life.  Steve sang Baritone in the original “Roadrunners” barbershop quartet.

At Texas Tech, Steve continued his enjoyment of music, singing and touring with the Tech Choir.  He was active in campus activities, including his fraternity, Delta Tau Delta, and as a Saddle Tramp, the Tech spirit organization.   Steve received a BBA, majoring in Marketing, in August 1966.  Not long after that, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was commissioned an Ensign on February 12, 1967.  He reported to his first sea-going assignment, the USS Jenkins (DD447) later that year. Steve was proud to call himself a “Tin Can Sailor”.  He served aboard the ship for about three years, during which time the ship made two deployments to Southeast Asia.

When Wolfe left active duty in 1971, he continued his career as a Naval Reservist, serving in various Reserve Commands over 23 years. His last major assignment was as the Navy Liaison Officer to the State Area Command of the New Mexico Army National Guard.  He retired as a Navy Captain in November 1989. Captain Wolfe was a qualified Surface Warfare Officer and wore the National Defense Service Medal, the VietNam Service Medal with four campaign stars, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal, the VietNam Campaign Medal, and the New Mexico Meritorious Service Medal.

Steve’s greatest loves were his family, his Lord, his vocal music, his Country, and his community.  He took great pride in the activities and accomplishments of his wife Gwen and his children.  He was passionate about choral music, singing for many years in the First United Methodist Church Chancel Choir and in Amarillo, at St Stephen United Methodist Church. His work, always important to him, included twelve years with a family company, B. E. Wolfe and Co, and then with Pepsi Bottling Group until he retired in December 2002.  He began a new career in 2003, working as an Estimator for Armstrong Construction Co. and finally in 2009 began working for the Neighborhood Watch organization in Roswell. He and Gwen retired to Amarillo, Texas in July 2016.

Wolfe was active in his community as well.  Through the years, he served on the Board of Directors for the Roswell Chapter of the American Red Cross, as a founding board member of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southeastern New Mexico, and as president of the Chaves County Crime Stoppers.  He particularly enjoyed a long-time affiliation with the New Mexico Soft Drink Association, serving as president during 2000-2001. He was also named the "Outstanding Citizen" in Roswell in 2016 for his numerous contributions to his community.

Steve was a loving grandfather, father, and husband and he will be sorely missed by a whole community of those who knew and loved him. The family will be hosting a small service on Friday, December 11 at 2:00 PM at the St Stephen United Methodist Church. Online viewing will be available for those who are unable to attend. The family will post a video on Wolfe's Facebook page and has created a YouTube channel for viewing: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBLcNj-wm0ovBKtYryrWuHQ/featured

For those who would like to send flowers, the family requests that a charitable donation be made to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society in lieu of flowers. Donations can be made through the organization’s website at www.support.nmcrs.org .
