Stephen Bradley Wolfe, Sr.

August 6, 1944 ~ December 6, 2020 (age 76)

Tribute

Stephen Bradley Wolfe, Sr. (August 6, 1944 to December 6, 2020)

Stephen Bradley Wolfe was born on August 6, 1944 in Woodward, Oklahoma.  He was the son of Helen Louise (Dockerty) Wolfe and B. E. (Bill) Wolfe, who was a B-24 pilot in the Pacific at the time. After WWII, the Wolfe family moved to Hereford, Texas and later to Roswell, NM, where Bill started an irrigation contracting business.  B. E. Wolfe died in July 2001 and Helen in June 2006.

After his active-duty military time, Steve met his wife of 48 years, Gwendolyn Thomas, who survives him.  They were married on July 31, 1972 at the First United Methodist Church of Roswell.   The couple had three children, all of whom survive him.  Dr. Stacia Lusby and her husband, James, reside and practice medicine in Amarillo, Texas.  Stephanie Schels and her husband, Jeff. live in Belton, Texas, where she taught school and he is a Chiropractic Physician.   Stephen Bradley Wolfe, Jr. (Brad) and his wife Rachel live and work in Washington, D.C.   Steve has six grandsons, Luke, Lincoln, Landon, and Levi Lusby of Amarillo, Cooper Schels of Belton and Casper Wolfe of Alexandria, VA. He has three granddaughters, Adeliene (Addie) Lou and Poppy Belle Wolfe of Alexandria, VA, and Taylor Schels of Belton, Texas.

Wolfe is also survived by his brother, John Leslie Wolfe and wife Brenna, of Bowie, Maryland, and by his sister Jennifer Lynn Wolfe, of Roswell, and their families.

Steve attended school in Roswell, graduating from Roswell High School in 1962 and he maintained close bonds with many of his high school friends his entire life.  It was during his high school years that Steve began a love of choral music which lasted all of his life.  Steve sang Baritone in the original “Roadrunners” barbershop quartet.

At Texas Tech, Steve continued his enjoyment of music, singing and touring with the Tech Choir.  He was active in campus activities, including his fraternity, Delta Tau Delta, and as a Saddle Tramp, the Tech spirit organization.   Steve received a BBA, majoring in Marketing, in August 1966.  Not long after that, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was commissioned an Ensign on February 12, 1967.  He reported to his first sea-going assignment, the USS Jenkins (DD447) later that year. Steve was proud to call himself a “Tin Can Sailor”.  He served aboard the ship for about three years, during which time the ship made two deployments to Southeast Asia.

When Wolfe left active duty in 1971, he continued his career as a Naval Reservist, serving in various Reserve Commands over 23 years. His last major assignment was as the Navy Liaison Officer to the State Area Command of the New Mexico Army National Guard.  He retired as a Navy Captain in November 1989. Captain Wolfe was a qualified Surface Warfare Officer and wore the National Defense Service Medal, the VietNam Service Medal with four campaign stars, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal, the VietNam Campaign Medal, and the New Mexico Meritorious Service Medal.

Steve’s greatest loves were his family, his Lord, his vocal music, his Country, and his community.  He took great pride in the activities and accomplishments of his wife Gwen and his children.  He was passionate about choral music, singing for many years in the First United Methodist Church Chancel Choir and in Amarillo, at St Stephen United Methodist Church. His work, always important to him, included twelve years with a family company, B. E. Wolfe and Co, and then with Pepsi Bottling Group until he retired in December 2002.  He began a new career in 2003, working as an Estimator for Armstrong Construction Co. and finally in 2009 began working for the Neighborhood Watch organization in Roswell. He and Gwen retired to Amarillo, Texas in July 2016.

Wolfe was active in his community as well.  Through the years, he served on the Board of Directors for the Roswell Chapter of the American Red Cross, as a founding board member of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southeastern New Mexico, and as president of the Chaves County Crime Stoppers.  He particularly enjoyed a long-time affiliation with the New Mexico Soft Drink Association, serving as president during 2000-2001. He was also named the "Outstanding Citizen" in Roswell in 2016 for his numerous contributions to his community.

Steve was a loving grandfather, father, and husband and he will be sorely missed by a whole community of those who knew and loved him. The family will be hosting a small service on Friday, December 11 at 2:00 PM at the St Stephen United Methodist Church. Online viewing will be available for those who are unable to attend. The family will post a video on Wolfe's Facebook page and has created a YouTube channel for viewing: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBLcNj-wm0ovBKtYryrWuHQ/featured

For those who would like to send flowers, the family requests that a charitable donation be made to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society in lieu of flowers. Donations can be made through the organization’s website at www.support.nmcrs.org .

Yes, stop the presses.  Gene is alive.  Don't send those sympathy cards just yet!  Poor Kay.  Here's her Facebook post just now:

I am so sick right now. Never in my life have I gone through so many emotion so rapid. This morning my neighbor came to take two kids to school. She went upstairs to wake them. Gene was in his recliner. she tried to talk to him, he was able to give a one word answer. I called the dr answering service. Dr said call 911. Alana started yelling grandpa is making strange noises, and breathing real hard. My friend went up, and yelled he isn’t responsive, and can’t talk .. firemen, peramedics, and EMT’s came, and started working on him. Much time passed, and I called Chad at work. A perinedic came to me bent down, took my hand, and said. We can’t get a heartbeat, or pulse, I’m sorry he is gone. Chad said thank you for everything you did for my dad, And please thank everyone that worked so hard on dad. Then he said call the schools, try to calm them. They were hysterical at that point. The paramedic wanted me to get dressed go to the ER to fill out paperwork, and determine what to do with the body. Chad immediately said no, she will not go to the hospital, she is high risk, and has Pneumonia right now. Also she cant

Leave the children. She can handle all by phone. They brought Gene down, and the paramedics thought the kids should say goodby. They did. It was devastating the grief the children were in.
We waited for for hours to hear anything. I went on FB to tell you that he .was gone.
After much time a dr called. He said he has a weak pulse, I mean very weak. I was so stunned. He said, he has pneumonia. He may have brain damage from lack of oxygen. He said he is grave, and I don’t know how it’s going to go.
Now hours later I get another call .
They said he is in ICU on a Venalator.
I know nothing other than this. To say I am embarrass would be an understatement. I am so sorry I posted without all the information. I can’t express the feeling of hearing he was dead, and then hearing he could be in worse shape than dead. Something Gene would ever want.
When the dr called to say they had a-pulse, Ethan stopped crying, and said grandma I’ve been praying hard, and asked the Lord not to take my grandpa before Christmas. He answered my prayer. It’s a miracle.
Please pray that it is a miracle . Forgive me for posting so soon, but you are my friends, and I really needed you.

Latest from Kay Taylor as of last night.  Love it!  LOL!

I just talked to the ICU nurse. I will tell you what she said. Remember he left this morning with a DOA, and this is tonught. God heard your prayers ... thank you so much. I cautiously say anything can happen, but this is to amazing to not share.
Nurse said he pulled the venalator tube out.
He is breathing on his own, with oxygen.
He won’t shut up talking about the kids. They told him to not talk so much, and save his air. She said he’s still talking.
She said for a DOA arrival this morning he is doing great.
God bless you all for your wonderful prayers.

From Kay Taylor 5 hr ago!

Much has been going on. I just talked to hospital. They did a echo gram, and found his heart is only functioning at 30 percent. They put him on the venalator, and he fought him. He can only live that way. I told them to get him off that thing, he would never want to live that way.
At this point he is able to breathe on his own, and talk. The doctor said without the machine he would have to set up hospice. I told him to bring him home, and I would take good care of him.
I did say if there is any way to keep him here until Christmas for the children, especially Ethan, because he knows God heard his prayer. He said I do believe God heard his prayer. When he arrived he was gone, I truly don’t know how I got the weak pulse.
With Kathryn dying here I wasn’t sure if the kids could take it again.
We talked this morning. Everyone wants him home. Ethan is praying again for him to be here at Christmas. If you all want me to stop posting I will. Nothing in our life has ever been normal. Please keep me in prayer. I’m falling apart inside, and strong on the outside for the kids.

I want him Home, but I was so worried how it would affect the kids. Gene has had to sleep in the room with Ethan, because of night terrors from his mother’s abuse. Last night he went to bed, I thought this is good. Not long he came down, I need my grandpa. That was hard. I told him I would make a bed on the couch, and stay with him in my recliner. I was relieved that he was able to sleep then. I may have to put a bed in the room Gene will be in, or he will be on the floor in there.

Kay, my David was alive and well for years with 25% ejection/pumping factor. He was preaching, mowing, driving, living life, etc.  David now takes medication to up the factor to 40%.  I don't know about Gene's heart issue but don't give up hope. It's so precious to hear about Ethan's faith because you and Gene have obviously lived that faith before him. God bless you.
