Jonell,

You the same ‘cacti kicker’ who went out West to cure his sinuses, then decided to take off all his clothes and jump into a pile of prickly pear cactus?! When someone walked up and asked why in world you would do something like that…!! You said, well… “it seemed like a good idea at the time…”!

It is with heavy heart I report that Sandy Sloan Smith is now in Avalon Memory Care. 2825 W. Canton Rd. Edinbury, TX 78539.  Her husband passed away last year and she has been living with her son in McAllen, TX. She does not have access to her phone or computer.  However, she spends Sundays with her son and family and he checks her phone and lets her return calls.  She sounds like her same old self.  Even if you cannot leave a message they will know you called.  I am sure she would love to receive birthday cards.  Her cell number is  (575) 937-3201.              Wishing everyone a joyous holiday season.

Thanks, Ann, for letting us know about Sandy. I'm so thankful that she's near her son and family; I have a dear friend who has no relatives nearby and they are struggling. David and I are truly blessed to be near our children so that we can have the help we need. I hope that all of you have a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends.

Happy birthday to all born in  November.   Glad to see members still on the web site.  My wife fell and broke her hip, so I have not been on.  She is now home and doing fine now so  I will help keep Rex and John L. in line HA!

These posted ‘monthly’ happy birthday wishes appear to be rather ‘general' and somewhat broad in context and not directed towards anyone in particular. It probably doesn’t mean much to those having birthdays that month anyway. If one really wanted to 'endear' oneself to classmates… click on their ‘Classmate Profile’ and send ‘em a birthday wish directly! My dos centavos and opine…

John L,  Thanks for your birthday wishes posted on my profile!  Atta boyah! wink

John D. I'm sorry to hear about your wife's hip situation.

John  L.  that is only  from  Rex  having spent  too much time in Califruity.  Some of us have to put as much as possible at one time because our internet service is hit and miss.  Fog alone stopped my service the last 3 days.

Mr. Blue Boy.... attracting attention to himself again?  Tsk, tsk...

John D,

Do I detect a bit of jealousy?  Internet reception might get better, if one moved out of Carlsbad Caverns...

Happy Birthday to the United States Marine Corps!

All over the world, Marines will be holding Birthday Celebrations to honor their legacy since 1775. Since 1921, the reading of Major General John A. Lejeune’s order No. 47 has been a mainstay of every Marine Corps Birthday Ball, serving as the official verbal declaration of the history, mission, and traditions of the Corps.

On November 10, 1775, a Corps of Marines was created by a resolution of Continental Congress. Since that date many thousand men have borne the name "Marine.” In memory of them it is fitting that we who are Marines should commemorate the birthday of our Corps by calling to mind the glories of its long and illustrious history.

The record of our corps is one which will bear comparison with that of the most famous military organizations in the world's history. During 90 of the 146 years of its existence the Marine Corps has been in action against the Nation's foes.

From the Battle of Trenton to the Argonne, Marines have won foremost honors in war, and in the long eras of tranquility at home, generation after generation of Marines have grown gray in war in both hemispheres and in every corner of the seven seas, that our country and its citizens might enjoy peace and security.

In every battle and skirmish since the birth of our corps, Marines have acquitted themselves with the greatest distinction, winning new honors on each occasion until the term "Marine" has come to signify all that is highest in military efficiency and soldierly virtue.

This high name of distinction and soldierly repute we who are Marines today have received from those who preceded us in the corps. With it we have also received from them the eternal spirit which has animated our corps from generation to generation and has been the distinguishing mark of the Marines in every age. So long as that spirit continues to flourish Marines will be found equal to every emergency in the future as they have been in the past, and the men of our Nation will regard us as worthy successors to the long line of illustrious men who have served as "Soldiers of the Sea" since the founding of the Corps.”

One of my favorite Marine Corps Birthday Ball traditions, is the serving of the cake. Cake is cut with a sword (what else did you expect from a Marine, a knife?) then given to the oldest Marine in attendance and then passed to the youngest. This signifies the passing of experience and knowledge from the old to the young in the Corps. Additionally, the oldest issued weapon in the United States military arsenal is the Non-commissioned Officer (NCO) sword. No matter where Marines are on November 10, they gather in celebration. Every Marine deserves to hear the words “Happy Birthday, Marine.” Please expect that Birthday wish to be returned with a dog bark, a YUT, or a loud, Semper Fidelis!

So HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MARINES and SEMPER FIDELIS!

Description

Semper fidelis is a Latin phrase that means "always faithful" or "always loyal". It is the motto of the United States Marine Corps, usually shortened to Semper Fi. It is also in use as a motto for towns, families, schools, and other military units.

Thanks for the BD wishes. Yes Pat I are old. When I was 9 or 10 years old one of my second cousins "same age as my parents" called me Grandpa, guess I was born old.

Thank you Saundra!

I like this old tractor, the wagon, the scarecrow, and the red barn! Reminds me of my Grandfather's farm in Pine Village, Indiana! My Dad's folks lived there. I remember taking the train with Mom when I was four years old. Upon arriving in St. Louis, the RR tracks, bridges, and terminal buildings were all covered with nasty black soot! Interesting how events come back to life in our memories. Changed trains in St. Louis and arrived in Indiana. During the summer of my 4th grade year we drove from Roswell passing through Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Illinois, on to Indiana. T'was even more of an adventure for a ten year old!  Tulsa, Oklahoma has some vivid memories as well... ugh!

What were some your childhood memories..?

Don't know about the rest of you, but this day in 1963 was a bad day for me.

That was a terrible day for me. I was in Bainbridge,MD so my husband and I drove to DC that night and sat across from the White House and mourned with others who were there. Terrible and so sad.

On November 21 1963 I was a sophmore at TCU and that night a couple of my friends and I heard that JFK had just arrived at Carswell AFB in Ft Worth and would be staying at the Texas Hotel in downtown FW.  We decided to go and see if we could see him.  Shortly after we arrived across the street from the hotel, the limo with JFK and the usual escorts arrived.  JFK got out of the limo in front of the hotel and Jackie stayed on the porch.  The president walked across the parking lot to a small crowd and began shaking hands.  I should add that he appeard to be by himself as we did not notice any SS with him.  We were about 6 or so feet away.  After about 10 minutes he turned and went back to join Jackie at the door to the hotel.  On the way back to the campus someone remarked that they were surprised that JFK walked into the crowd since there were no lights covering the parkiing lot.  The next day is history.  The next morning we had some rain showers but it cleared off by mid morning.  If the rain had continued, the bubble top on the limo would have been in place.
