Rex, thanks for the 55th reunion shot of Missouri Avenue School alumni. I'm surprised at how many faces I do recognize!
I don't, however, recall Mrs. Ludlow but my Missouri Avenue story is kind of strange ...
If you remember the "old" days, school started the Tuesday following Labor Day. On that day in 1950, my mother marched me in to Missouri Avenue to register ... problem was I was only five years old (my birthday wasn't until November 8th). They wouldn't enroll me.
My mother was not to be deterred though. On November 9th, she marched me in to the school again and said "He's six now." They explained that I should have been six by Labor Day but she demanded to see that in writing. They couldn't and she prevailed. So I started first grade late.
It gets worse though ... In late January of 1951, I contracted polio and was hospitalized for 38 straight months. IE: My first grade time was limited so perhaps I can be excused for not remembering my teacher's name.
To complete the story, when I got out of the hospital in early April 1954 I should have been in the 4th grade but, of course had no formal schooling since January of 1951. Again, my mother marched me in to Missouri Avenue. The school wanted me to pick up where I left off (back in first grade I guess). My mother wouldn't have it ... she didn't want me to "get behind" my group.
So I jumped from 1st to 4th grade kinda like magic. Problem was, I barely knew my alphabet. I couldn't read or write a single word. It was tough catching up. Many of my 4th grade classmates assumed I was retarded and functionally I was.
Anyway, I would not recommend this to routine to anyone but I'm very glad it happened to me as, otherwise, I wouldn't know any of you fine folks since I'd have graduated with the class of 1966.
