Rex, thanks for the 55th reunion shot of Missouri Avenue School alumni. I'm surprised at how many faces I do recognize!

I don't, however, recall Mrs. Ludlow but my Missouri Avenue story is kind of strange ...

If you remember the "old" days, school started the Tuesday following Labor Day. On that day in 1950, my mother marched me in to Missouri Avenue to register ... problem was I was only five years old (my birthday wasn't until November 8th). They wouldn't enroll me.

My mother was not to be deterred though. On November 9th, she marched me in to the school again and said "He's six now." They explained that I should have been six by Labor Day but she demanded to see that in writing. They couldn't and she prevailed. So I started first grade late.

It gets worse though ... In late January of 1951, I contracted polio and was hospitalized for 38 straight months. IE: My first grade time was limited so perhaps I can be excused for not remembering my teacher's name.

To complete the story, when I got out of the hospital in early April 1954 I should have been in the 4th grade but, of course had no formal schooling since January of 1951. Again, my mother marched me in to Missouri Avenue. The school wanted me to pick up where I left off (back in first grade I guess). My mother wouldn't have it ... she didn't want me to "get behind" my group.

So I jumped from 1st to 4th grade kinda like magic. Problem was, I barely knew my alphabet. I couldn't read or write a single word. It was tough catching up. Many of my 4th grade classmates assumed I was retarded and functionally I was.

Anyway, I would not recommend this to routine to anyone but I'm very glad it happened to me as, otherwise, I wouldn't know any of you fine folks since I'd have graduated with the class of 1966.

Thanks Rex I am really looking forward to reuniting with those I remember and getting aquainted with those I didn't know as well!!

Pat, What a great story! I know it was so great back then, but what a wonderful Mother and her resilience to get you in school! I know you are proud of her for prevailing!!

I see that no one has named the people in the picture who were in the 1st grade together at Missouri Avenue.
So......here is my attempt!  Left to right Dan Cook, Rex Booth, Linda Ingram, Bubbles Langford, Charlotte Adams, Ann Stockton, Trish Lappin, Kay Price, and Claudia Phillips.

Saundra,

You are the winner!  You are spot on naming those in the picture at Missouri Avenue!  You must have attended the 55th RHS Reunion... hmmm ?!!

Dan,

How did you manage to get in the picture?  Isn't it true when you moved to Roswell you started at  North Jr. High in 7th grade...?  I'm only going by what you wrote in your book.  wink

Barbara (Bubbles) Lankford (Carlson)

Linda, Charlotte, Ann, and I were the only ones in the picture that started first grade in Mrs. Ludlow's class.  When the new school was completed, Linda and I were moved to Mrs. Spencer's class.  I remember her as one of my favorite teachers throughout my years in the Roswell schools.

Pat, I am thinking that you were in Mrs. Spencer's class also.  I remember that you were "in and out" of school in those first few years, but I did not know the whole story.  It makes me sad that you and your mother went through so much stress during that time.  I also think that you were in the same classes with Ann, Charlotte, Linda, and me most of our years at Missouri Avenue.  The four of us were in the same class each year except for the 4th grade when we had Miss Hobson and Linda had a different teacher who she loved and kept in contact with through the years.  I cannot remember that teacher's name, but I can picture her in my mind.

Mrs. Ludlow was my 1st Grade Teacher. Charlotte was in that class and we still talk about Mrs. Ludlow being a teacher that truly connected to her students. Mrs. Ludlow made the class fun!

Our 1st grade class (first semester September 1950) was in the basement of the old three-story red-brick building. We had our second semester (January 1951) in the new light-brick single-story building.

I thought it so cool... a few of us 1st graders at Missouri Ave. had our picture taken at the 55th RHS reunion!   Hey there! Anyone on this forum can chime in and tell a tale of their grade school days! If you have pictures, and need them posted, you can send then to:  "Notify Me" with a digital format attachment and I'll post them along with your comments!

I don't remember any of the students in my first grade class, but I was very shy!  I was in Mrs. Oberworkman's class at Edgewood.  Any of our  classmates remember being in her class?

Years later first grade was my favorite grade to teach.....loved it!!!

I went to  Washington Ave. Sad to say I can't remember any of my Teachers names. I do remember my Teacher in the 3/5 grade that made a crayon picture of a Birthday Cake for each of the childrens Birthday! I remember she was Pregnant and she was so sweet! I wish I could remember her name!

Bubbles I am like you I can picture the Teachers in my mind!

Bubbles, my memory fails but I'll take your word that I was in Mrs. Spencer's first grade class. Thanks for filling this in.

I missed second and third grades but, as I recall, my fourth, fifth and sixth grade teachers were Miss Green, Mr. Connor (convicted pediphile) and Mrs. Blackburn.

There are many, many people I've met over the years whose name's now alude me. I think it points out how special and important our teachers were to us that so many of us do recall their names!

I was at Mark Howell in 1st grade, and don't remember a thing other than other than living next door to Dick Kelly on No. Penn. We were a block from NMMI where my Dad taught math.

We moved to a house on E. 5th that my Dad built over two summers. 2nd thru 6th grades were at Edgewood. Two teachers I will never forget, my 3rd grade teacher, Mrs. Jackson, and Miss Powell, a small dynamo if a woman.

Mrs. Jackson's favorite line was "Quit acting up or I'm going to pinch your head off and use it as a bowling ball down the hallway." Miss Powell was small in stature but was always on the go. She was on my paper route and always had a nice gift for me at Christmas, usually a book because she knew I liked to read a lot.

Paula Carl (Cowee Miller)

I went to Missouri Avenue also. My first grade teacher was Mrs. Buchanan and I really liked her. She was an older teacher and sent me to the principal one time because I was talking in class. My parents weren't too happy about that incident so I made the wise choice to keep my mouth shut from then on!  I can vividly remember learning to read out of the Dick and Jane books and somewhere along the way learning to write in cursive; making endless circles and loops, circles and loops. Unfortunately my handwriting now has become a scrawl that is at times illegible. Oh dear!

Here is a funny story!!  I also went to Missouri Avenue in the first grade but I cannot remember who my first grade teacher was!!  I lived on Kentucky behind where Sears used to be and walked from there to Missouri Ave. every day.  Then when I was in the second grade we moved to South Spring Acres!  But I remember very little about my first year at Missouri Ave.surprise Lynn

I also started the first grade at Missouri Avenue.  We lived on South Lea.  We moved during my third or fourth grade year and I went to Edgewood School..  I remember Bubble fell down while roller skating and broke her arm.  After that we could not roller skate at school.  Teddy Garrett picked on me all the time.  I don't remember any of my teachers at Missosur Avenue.

Fred, I was the same as you. 1st grade at Mark Howell and then transferred to Edgewood. My

favorite teacher was Mrs. Marsh. I also had Miss Powell. I broke my foot on stilts and was put

in a cast. That didn't stop me from playing soccor. That cast really helped my kick. Good old days.

I had Mrs. Powel for Music and Art in 6th grade at Edgewood , and loved her.  I think everyone did!  I remember she taught us to play the flutafone.  I ran into her years later when I dropped my kids off at daycare.  She was working at the desk.  I can't remembrr the name of the place, but it was located on North Main.
