Bill was correct naming "Fair Stadium".  And Fred was spot on with the 'original' name "League Park (Stadium)".  I understand Roswell first began forming a team in 1923 and the League Stadium was built and ready for 1924.

A li'l more on Joe Bauman...

Joe Bauman amassed 337 home runs in 1,019 professional games, belting 72 taters in 1954 alone. (AP Photo)

Fans shoving dollars bills throught the fence  after Joe Bauman knocked a homerun!

I remember going to Joe Bauman's Texaco station (it was on west Second Street I think) many times. Joe would sometimes pump my gas. He was a very pleasant fellow!

PS ... remember going to the gas station and asking fo "fifty-cents worth"? It wasn't that unusual a request and you sat in the car vwhile someone else handled the gas.

Pat,

Those 50 cent fill-up's could take us a long way! At 50 cents for two gallons, you could make "two round trips" dragging Main Street from Greer's to Wylies and back... sometimes squeeze in a trip to Pop's before the '53 Studebaker started running on fumes...!!

Those were the days my friend!

PS   Remember the road trip to Carlsbad?!  ha

There was a Drive-In burger place out on East Second Street. "Anyone know the name"??

I really felt proud when Linda Dumas and I could scrape together 50 cents to $1 for my '49 Ford. We could drive to school and back and then up and down Main several time and have gas left over for First Methodist Church Sunday morning, too!! laughwink AHA, Great Memories and Fun times!

Rex, yep ... I'll never forget our Carlsbad road trip (and right now there's about 600 others alumni wondering what the hell we're talking about)!!!

Rex there was a Tastee Freeze just west of Atkinson.  I went there to eat and met the cook, John's sister, and she didn;t believe I was old enough to be a cop(25 at the time).  Found  out we had lived in the same block for a while.  I knew John lived there, but didn't know he had a younger sister.  We have now been married for 51 years.

John D,

So you tried the cooks cooking and wound up married. Cute story! Was the Tastee Freeze on the north or south side of east 2nd?  Currently there  is an old building on the north side that has a strange wedge shaped canopy in front above the parking area. It may have been a drive-n or better yet, a drive-in package store....

The road trip in the Studebaker to Carlsbad...  As you put it: "A New Guiness Book of World Records: 90 miles in 59 minutes!  Remember all those dips in the highway just south of Artesia!! Those dips sent us 'flying' airborne... with sparks showering at each landing!  Is it true, Don Haye's hair turn snow-white halfway to Carlsbad?

Rex it was on the north side.  I too remember watching Joe play baseball and seeing him hit homeruns.  I lived on  east Mcgaffey and we could see the stadium lights during games.  Speaking of dips I well remember tthose on the old highway.  Still took that way several times just to hear my kids enjoy the rollercoaster ride, didn't go over so well witth the better half.

Paula Carl (Cowee Miller)

What great fun it was to hit the dips on the Carlsbad road!  We kids absolutely loved it because our Dad would speed up so we really got the full effect. Our cousins from Louisiana came to see us after going to the Caverns and they had no clue about the dips!  When they arrived at our house that's all they could talk about for the first few minutes. It was really funny to us old-timers.

As I recall, Don Hayes finished this trip in brown pants!

It should also be pointed out that this "bandit run" was at night ... talk about over-driving your headlights!

Do you also recall me writing this up as an article for the school newspaper? When Mrs. Wright (the Jourbalism Teacher) saw the article, it almost cost me my job as the newspaper's Editor for writing an "unauthorized" story. It, needless to say, never made the paper.

REX, REMEMBER  no seat belt around that time  (Those dips sent us 'flying' airborne.) beside the carsmiley

Pat Riley,

I do recall something to that effect… being a "hot-flash news" item!  You being the witness and survivor to tell the tale! But, no such thing as ‘free press’ at RHS back in ’62… ha!

Mrs. Wright was right! And when you’re right you’re a Wright…and Pat, You are All Right! Could this harsh example of supressed journalism have driven some of us to became Dylan heads during the summer of '63?

I believe the song “Forever Young” strikes a chord with you?!!

02/24/22 11:41 PM #6585

Patrick Riley

Absolutely ... "Forever Young" has been my favorite song for ~50 years. I still listen to it almost every day (the Joan Baez version ... better than Dylan's). Still ... Dylan, as the writer, deserves most of the credit.

Carl Sandburg may have been our parent's poet laureate but I truly believe Bob Dylan was ours!

See Forever Young lyrics below. Sad, though, none of us have stayed "forever young".

May God bless and keep you always,
May your wishes all come true,
May you always do for others
And let others do for you.
May you build a ladder to the stars
And climb on every rung,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.

May you grow up to be righteous,
May you grow up to be true,
May you always know the truth
And see the lights surrounding you.
May you always be courageous,
Stand upright and be strong,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.

May your hands always be busy,
May your feet always be swift,
May you have a strong foundation
When the winds of changes shift.
May your heart always be joyful,
May your song always be sung,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.

Excellent!

In 2016, Dylan was awarded the "Nobel Prize in Literature"... "for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition”. Not bad for a boy from Duluth, Minnesota.  I understand early in his career, he lived for a short time in Albuquerque. It is true, Dylan met Baez on a reservation near Gallup...?  wink

Pat, I just received a message for you from one of our RHS classmates:

From:  Estelle Lehman Matus

To:  Pat Riley - Thanks for the mention of "Forever Young" by Bob Dylan. Wonderful song! - Estelle

Rex, thanks for sharing Estelle Lehman's note. We go back toi Missouri Avenue Grade School.

I enjoyed your embedded video and am glad other's share my opinion of Forever Young

A personal Joan Baez story ... I saw her in concert at the Paolo Soleri Amphitheater in Santa Fe in the early 1970s. It's a very intimate setting seating only 600 or so and is totally open air. Even with the venue's small size, it wasn't a sellout. Anyway, it started to rain before the appointed start time and Joan Baez refused to come on stage in the rain. Finally the organizer's constructed a small tent-like structure on the stage for her to perform under. There were no tents for the attendees so we spent 3 or more hours in the rain soaked to the bone. Worth it though.

If you're not familar with the Paolo Soleri Amphitheater, you've missed your chance. It's been closed (and likely demolished) for a number of years. It was on the grounds of the Santa Fe Indian School off of Cerrillos Road.

Rex, thank you for sharing the Joan Baez video of Forever Young!  The song has such a positive and inspiring message!  Makes us feel young at heart, and that's a good thing!

You mentioned attending Missouri Avenue School. This was taken at our 55th RHS class reunion. These are some of those classmates who attended 1st grade at Missouri Ave during 1950-51 school year!  Does Mrs. Ludlow ring a bell?

Who of you can name these classmates?
