May everyone have a happy Easter.  One of our things  I enjoy is having our family together and hiding eggs(now plastic) for the grandkids and great grandkids.  The problem is these plastic eggs always have at least 2 or 3 that have adapted and grown legs because they are not able to be found where I hid them.  One  got tired of  hiding and came out to play in march jut before Easter of the following year.  Most of the time they get blown out, but that may be 3 or 4 months later.  My wife and kids just blame it on me not remembering where I hid them

Bunnies, eggs, Easter gifts and fluffy, yellow chicks in gardening hats all stem from pagan roots. They were incorporated into the celebration of Easter separately from the Christian tradition. According to University of Florida's Center for Children's Literature and Culture, the origin of the celebration and the Easter bunny, can be traced back to 13th century pre-Christian Germany, when people worshiped several gods and goddesses. The Teutonic deity Eostra was the goddess of spring and fertility, and feasts were held in her honor on the Vernal Equinox. Her symbol was the rabbit because of the animal’s high reproduction rate.

Spring also symbolized new life and rebirth; eggs were an ancient symbol of fertility. However, this association came much later when Roman Catholicism became the dominant religion in Germany in the 15th century and merged with already ingrained pagan beliefs.

The first Easter bunny legends were documented in the 1500s. By 1680, the first story about a rabbit laying eggs and hiding them in a garden was published. These legends were brought to the United States in the 1700s when German immigrants settled in Pennsylvania Dutch country, according to the University of Florida's Center for Children.

The tradition of making nests for the rabbit to lay its eggs soon followed. Eventually, nests became decorated baskets and colorful eggs were swapped for candy, treats and other small gifts.

So while you're scarfing down chocolate bunnies and marshmallow chicks this Sunday, think fondly of this holiday's origins.

We have lived on some acreage 5 miles from town for 33 years now. We have a lot of bunny rabbits running around on the property.  In all this time, I have yet to find out where those rabbits are hiding those eggs...

Also, wanted to share the view from my desk with you....

Fred,

That is a great view! There's nothing like sun reflecting on lake water to paint a nice relaxing picture. Is thiis lake fed by a spring or stream?

Speaking of bunny rabbits... The man in the picture was my great uncle who lassoed giant rabbits for a living! The only other guy I knew that had a "30's Buick" parked in his front lawn was... Cal Turley!  1935 or '36'?

Rex, it is fed by an underground stream and runoff from rainfall, 2½ acres in size.  It was my tranquilizer for many years while I was working.  Also some nice fishing.  Some bream for when the grandkids were young, some very nice black bass, the largest caught was 7lbs 9oz.  And catfish.

The pond is also home to several dozen Canadian honkers most of the year. (see video and pic below) They eat well with several corn feeders around the pond.

The only thing that has been shot on the property are cameras.  People stop by wanting to fish, but we tell them it is family only.

Fred,

You've got one great pond! You are very lucky to enjoy this beautiful serene nature! I loved the video of the 'honkers' cruising in with a "uniform landing".... could teach the Blue Angels a few tricks of the trade!  (I have subscribed to your YouTube channel! Loved "Ghost Riders" by Glen Campbell and Roy Clark! Glen's Twelve-String Electric Guitar can really sing!)

Looks like we both have a love for water and the wonderful view it provides. When I lived on the West Coast in Discovery Bay... this was my "backyard"!

Well, as it is a wet day here, I decided to do Rex's bidding and tell a night rabbit hunting story!

One of my best friends was Johnny Perry. We spent many weekends out at his grandparent's little farm north of Roswell hunting, which led to my meeting a couple of older cousins of his.

They had an old half cab jeep with a rack on the back, and they liked shooting jack rabbits at night. So, it was just a bit before we were invited along, getting to stand in the back, while the jeep swerved all over the 'desert'.

Most of this was done on Jess Corn's ranch outside of Roswell. Mr. Corn would give us a couple of boxes of shells and we were off. Every so often, he would ask us to bring in a bunch of the rabbits, and one of his hands would cook them up along with cornmeal or something to feed his hounds.. used to chase bobcats.

Well,,,,,, one night we were out and chasing scads of jacks. I noticed that there was a line of tumble-weeds coming up in front of us, and about the time I mentioned it to Johnny, we 'arrived'. Turned out that it was a ditch full of tumble-weeds, and the jeep planted itself there!! Johnny went over the roof, landing about ten feet out on the other side of the ditch, I managed to stay in the back, but my glasses didn't (luckily we were able to find them). One of the cousins banged up his knees, but altogether we were lucky. The Jeep was not much worse for the wear, and I was informed that the next time I noticed something like that to beat on the roof!!

These were the same cousins we later went with collecting rattlesnake rattles to sell to Inez Curios on West 2nd. (but that's another story) wink

For the record, we sold a portion of our acreage to our daughter and her husband. The pond is now theirs. We still live on what we kept.. The pond is about 200 yards away. I still get to fish it and admire it from our house.

Rex, when you were looking in my You Tube account, you probably noticed a folder with several "shuffle dance" videos.  I had never heard of shuffle dancing until a few months back, but I understand it has been around since the 1800s.  I am transfixed watching them as they dance. Can you just imagine this group trying to shuffle dance...??

Sherry,

When I had an assignment down in Houston, I got introduced to line dancing. It was great, but it got to where I was out every night somewhere line dancing. I reached the point where I was ignoring my family, my work was slipping, and I was tired all the time. I finally realized I had a real problem.

Luckily, one of the ladies working in our division, who had the same problem once, sent me to the LDA (Line Dancing Anonymous). After airing my problems, I was put on the Two Step Program.

Well Folks, another Sucess Story!!  How John L spent his summer vacation at (LDA)  Rehab Center in Macon County Georgia or was it  Knashvile, Tenny-see...

Fred,  I didn't see a "Shuffle Dance" folder, but I did check out Ismael Deives playing "Sultans of Swing"! This the first time I've seen anyone playing it on an acoustic guitar! Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits would be proud of Deives fine guitar work!

Did find this...  "Dey sho is doin' the jig alright"!!
