Cal Turley

Hey guys,

Here is a photo of my front yard. Not as good as Fred's view but not bad for Roswell!

Rex,  I had a 1935 Buick Coupe with a flat head 8 cylinder and a 4 speed granny trans. Back to rabbit hunting.I remember going out behind the High School and chasing down rabbits hitting them with a Billy Club. Sounds kind of cruel now but in those days there wasn't a heck of a lot to do. Also the farmers and neighbors around the school hated the little buggers because they ate up their crops and gardens. I hope the PC Police don't see this and come after me!!!

Yes call Cal, Beautiful view!

I remember Perrine and I went rabbit hunting with a couple of guys.  Don't remember who the guys were,    We chased across a bumpy field.  The rabbit would freeze and one of the guys got out and shot it!  We have some rabbits that have made their home under our shed.  Cal wants to get rid of them, but I try to protect them,

Fred, Rex and Cal, I enjoyed seeing pics of your views!  When we lived in Indiana, we lived across the street from a lake, but I don't have any pics.  In winter there were ice fisherman, and once we saw a small plane land on the lake.  Oklahoma has lots of lakes, but none across the street from us!  (Sigh)

I don't shuffle dance, but I  took up tap a few years ago.  Haven't been able to tap for awhile due to broken leg and ankle bone!  Hoping to get back to it in the Fall!

Saundra,

Sorry to hear about your leg and ankle!  Hoping it will heal quickly so you can enjoy your tap dancing!

That was a good story of You and Perinne going rabbit hunting at night!  But forgetting who your date was that night sounds a bit like the one Cal told, forgetting the name of his date that night chasing the "Desert Demon"....  wink

Did anybody ever hunt them behind WAFB?  Some really nice big Jack's back there.  Like Saundra, I can't remember who I hunted with.  May have been Jim Raby or my future brother-in-law Doug Evans.

Fred, we (Joe Rhodes, Garry Robbins, Jim Ayers) and I  used to hunt Jack rabbits out by the air base untill

the air police came out with guns drawn, put us in a prone position and let us know we were not to come back

and shoot any weapons around the base. That was our last rabbit hunt out there.

Ferrell, in my Sr. year, I was dating my future wife, Katie Evans. Her Dad was a Lt. Col. at Walker.  I was on and off the base so much, most of the MPs knew me. They kind of looked the other way when we hunted near there...

There were rabbits on the base runways also.  While  I was patrolling one night I saw a small cottontail hide in an old tire.  I caught him and put him in the glovebox of the patrollcar to show my kids the next day.  My sgt. met me and told me my mom had  just been taken to the hospital and I took the car to the station and forgot about the rabbit.  Nothing was found with my mom(believe it was low sugar but she was not known diabetic at the time).  I went to work the next night in the same car and it was gone but nobody ever said anything.

Now that we've just about 'annihilated'  all the jack rabbits... figured someone would post pictures of their pet "jack-a-lope"...

John L. came up with an idea that might be of interest to our Classmates.  John said what if we asked our classmates: "What was your first car?  What did it cost back then?  Do you have any pictures of your that car? Then post photo of your car (if you have one).  If you need help posting the picture click "Contact Us" and I'll post it for you...

Well Folks, after a deep and wide discussion with Rex, we have come to the conclusion that we need to offer a new (and Exciting) line of discovery.... Namely: what was the first BRAND NEW auto you possessed??? and perhaps the purchase price.

This beauty was mine. 1970 SS 454 Chevelle complete with 3 major* options = $3683.00

* the major options: tinted glass $32, bucket seats $102, cowl induction $122

Inline Image Not Displayed ..Well, it appears that I will have to have Rex's assistance here!!

Done Deal, John!  Thanks for posting!!

John L,

Your gold 1970 SS 454 Chevelle  is a beauty!  A real head turner! I understand the LS6 engine was rated at 450 HP!! Was yours the M-22 Four-on-the floor or a Turbo Hydra-matic 400?  That's a far cry from the bicycle you peddled all the way down to Wylies to flirt with the car-hop...  wink

Again... Thanks for posting!

Rex, It was the M-22 close ratio four speed, I was not convinced that the automatic was faster (it was). It may seem strange to the folks of today, but remote right side mirrors were an option as was an AM radio.

Anyway, mine was almost the first 454 in Alaska..My roomie's brother made it back to Anchorage 5 days before me with his.

Coming up the ALCAN highway, there was a Mountie road block in Yukon, checking for drunks. They had me pull over, because they wanted to see the engine!

Hey Dolls & Gents!

Your stories and pictures of your Old Jalopyies are even more welcome!  I believe there are several classmates who drove cars made in the 1930's and 40's!  Time to fess up!

Paula Carl (Cowee Miller)

Our first new car was an Olds 442. Beautiful blue metallic. No power steering; no air conditioning. Well soon after we bought it I got pregnant and that car was so heavy and hard to turn that we got rid of it rather quickly!  I hated to see it go but you know how pregnant women are 😵‍💫.

Paula,

Do you recall the year of your Olds 442?  And I do get it, Men are from Mars... Women from Venus.  wink

My first car was a 47 pontiac which I have previously talked about.  My first new car was a Mazda with the rotary engine.  It turned out to be a lemon as every time 1000 miles were added it would just comlpletely die by burning up the fuse on the battery.  #3 time was on highway south of Roswell at midnight(needless to say that was the last time).   No one could ever find out the cause  and the next owner totaled it when it died and caused a crash.   My next one was chrysler station wagon which I had for several years

The first car I had my sister bought for me and it was a
1949 Dodge. I had other used cars after that. I can relate
to Paula In not having a big enough car so after 4 children
we bought our first brand new car a 1974 Chrysler Station wagon.

Rex, Tonya was born August 1970 so it was a 69 or 70. It was a great car but HEAVY and I just couldn't maneuver it. My hubby wasn't too happy but he purchased it without letting me test drive it. 😵‍💫

Paula,

Yes, that's kinda (uhh) lame, him not getting power steering or power brakes. In 1970 most cars were equipped with those conveniences for "a few dollars more".... like in the 1965 spaghetti western starring Clint Eastwood!  ðŸ¤

John D,

I can relate to your Mazda battery fuse problem. Most are caused by an intermittent voltage short to ground which produces excess current draw on the battery. Excess current draw will cause all kinds of situations. The best way to locate the source (in most cases) is find a reputable electrical technician who can track down the current draw.  First thing to check is the ground wire from motor to chassis. It's process of elimination. I've spent many hours doing the like with a VOM meter.

Yeah Rex, trying to remember all of the cars I have owned sure brings back memories. The best I can remember I think I have had 28 different cars, but 3 really stand out. My 1st one was a 1952 Chevy that I bought from Martin/DeNio Chrysler. I bought it from them while I was working there in the parts department, during summer vacation, for $200. The 2nd was a 49 Ford 2 door coupe with a flathead police interceptor engine.I bought it from the Ford dealer here where it was traded in by Mrs.Ryan,a 2nd grade school teacher that some of you may remember. About a year later Billy was driving it and was over at Jimmy and Linda Qualls house ( Mrs. Ryan lived across the street ) when she came over and offered to buy it back for $100 more than I payed for it.Like a bug dummy I didn't sell it back to her. The first new car was a 1968 Chevy Chevelle Red with White interior, 3 speed on the column with a 307 cc engine.I had just returned from an overseas tour in the Army, new job and no credit history etc. But an old friend, Gilbert Lujan, who was a loan officer at 1st Nat. Bank either had enough faith in me( or pity for me) he okayed a loan for $2,800. Payments were $88 per month and I had to struggle like mad to come up with the payment every month for 3 years. All the rest were just means of transportation with no special meaning.

My first was a 55 red/black Plymouth Belvedere.  Did anybody else name their car?  I had "Traveling Man" in gold letters across the back window.  I was into Ricky Nelson...

Cal,

I think I may have topped you. To the best of my memory I have had 43 cars and pickups. I bought many slightly used (a year or two old) as I hated the bite on new car depreciation. But I have bought 11 new, starting with the SS Chevelle. I got married shortly after and then went through a long series of Chevrolet station wagons, vans, suburbans, etc. Many of these were the chevy diesels, which I never had a problem with.

At present, I have no NEW rigs. My best buy was a 3 year old Cadillac ATS Luxury super loaded with 8300 miles on it. I don't drive it too much, but have about 21000 miles on it now. Not bad for a 2014, other than all the guff I get from my kids!!

I look back and wish that I had been able to keep a few, like my 63 Ford 406, 65 Ford 427, or my 65 vette stingray coupe. Oh well, next time around!! wink

Oh by the way, I have always named all of my cars. (some not printable!!)
