Ah, the transitions in Music.  Some say Fats Domino bridged the gap between '1940's Pop into early '50's Rock 'n Roll. The next transition came early 1964, when the Beatles invaded America featured on the Ed Sullivan Show .  I remember hearing "I Want to Hold Your Hand and "I Saw Her Standing There" in December of 1963. So within 5 years the British are main stage. All this during Viet Nam with Bob Dylan's poetic verse affecting folk music and individual thinking.

"Fast forward' 5 years to 1969... "Creedence Clearwater Revival"  was outselling the Beatles!  More transitions to come?  You Bet!

Thanks, Rex!  And Happy 4th of July to all of you!

It's that time of year again. Step outside, and it sounds like a war zone with all the fireworks being shot off. My dogs are scared stiff. Neighbor across the road, his horses are running around like crazy. We have even had people from town stop on these country roads, and start shooting big boomers.

Yeah Fred!

In my neighborhood in Roswell it sounded like "bombs" blasting in your backyard!! Even though the actual "bomb blaster" was two blocks away!  The  4th of July has become (in my humble opinion)  "insane"!  These groups of 'noise revelers' have no consideration for others... than themselves having the mentality of a 10 year old. I have for some time believed these 'rocket launchers' should be banned... if not all "exploding" fireworks! I've seen cities on the West Coast band them completely because 'out of towners' came to the Monterey Bay beaches and literally left a huge mess for locals to have to clean up.  Last year I had to clean firework debris off my roof and yard which shows the potential fire hazard of "out of control" fireworks. I've considered going to the mayor with this situation and if no results take it to the RDR for our local 'good ole boy' system to deal with... I'm glad you raised the issue, Fred!  yes

Yep............ you guys are getting old......

This is supposed to be fun....?  sob  crying

John Doyal

yep I agree, I bet Rex had some M80's in his younger days that were actually twice as loud as any rockets sold today.  And ten times more dangerous because they were used to blow buckets and barrels into the air with it ending when a bucket went sideways and hit an onlooker.  This year allowed everyone to not be covid worried and celebrate the 4th.

Unfortunately, those  M-80 & M-100 bombs can be purchased from a warehouse at New Mexico/Texas stateline on highway 54.  That's how illegal fireworks get into N.M. in the hands of what others call...pyromaniac terrorists.

John L... not getting old.... just going "deaf"!!   ðŸ‘‚ ðŸ‘‚

Rex, Thanks for the directions!!

Actually, if anyone has ever been in the far east for "Chinese" New Year (it was Feb. 10 this year, year of the Dragon), you would KNOW what fireworks are, and it goes on all night. Normally the following morning, all the streets are at least ankle deep in leftover papers, etc.

Rogersville, Tennessee; population about 4600, opens up the big city park and has food trucks, stands, games, live music all day on the 4th. Also during the day; car shows, a parade and many other events. At about 9pm, they put on a MAJOR fireworks show syncronized to music on the local radio station. It lasts 30 to 40 minutes. People come from all around and it is estimated there are 30,000 or more visitors.... Ya'll welcome.....

We usually have a little private show on New Years. Crazy Carl's Fireworks has a bogo deal! Last year my namesake spent a whole bunch and we had about 20 or more minutes of aerial FUN. including a dozen 3" mortars. The neighbors come out and set on their porches to watch (usually wrapped in blankets).

such fun wink

John it reminded me of the firecrackers that were set off while at Ft. Sill.  Fireworks were illegal on post so the MPs confiscated them and destroyed them by setting them off, there were literally thousands of blackcats which left a 4-6" pile of paper in front of the MP barracks  It left the guys just back from Nam diving under their bunks.

The Christmas before David and I married we went with a group of people to Natchitoches,LA (think Steel Magnolias). The bus dropped us off and went to park somewhere because there were about 100,000 people there for the opening ceremony for the Christmas season. Friends had set up chairs for us right on the lake front so we got situated and waited for the show to begin. And begin it did!  I looked over at David to see how he was enjoying the show and he was gripping the chair arms for all he was worth and I knew instantly that we had erred mightily!!  Those fireworks sounded just like incoming mortars to him and he had escaped death by mortar several times while in Vietnam. I knew that if he ran we would never find him in that crowd so I just kinda clung to him and finally the show was over. Needless to say we have never attended a fireworks show since then; if possible I just walk out in the yard and observe. I miss seeing them but I don't make a big deal out of not seeing them.  Raleigh ,NC puts on a spectacular 1 hour show complete with a live orchestra. I was blessed to attend that show several times when I resided there.

Neighbors all around us set off fireworks 2 days before the Fourth, and all night of the fourth!  We didn't get much sleep for 3 nights!  I am pleased the Fourth is over!  When we lived in Altus, we climbed up on our roof and watched the fireworks display from a nearby lake!  One year we went to the lake, and our son accidently locked the keys in the trunk!  Cal walked home and back to get a spare set,  He wasn't very happy about that!

My son came from Albuquerque to Roswell on Friday 6-30 for My Sisters 90th
Birthday Party on the 1st. His wife couldn't come because they have 2 LARGE
dogs and they both are a nervous wreck when firework season strarts so she
had to stay home with them. They usually and ask their daughter and granddaughter
to watch them but they didn't feel like it would be right to ask someone to watch 2
very nervous dogs! In Albuquerque it is really awful.
Roswell was really no better. I couldn't believe my neighourhood! As Rex said it
did sound like mortar shells. Sometimes I even thought it was Gun shots! We
did get to watch a drone show and fireworks ont the evening of the first at
the old airport! It was very nice!
When I was growing up in Roswell My Dad had a Military Flair Gun. We would
go out to the Caprock and He would shoot it off.

Saundra, Was That Altus, Oklahoma? We lived there from 1968 to 1972.
My Husband was in Vietnam the last year the kids and I just stayed there.
I didn't want to move them around to much.

Sherrie,

GUN SHOTS!!! WOW

Actually, When I was young, my Grandfather and many of his neighbors would go out on the 'eve' of the 4th and shoot off their shotguns. Also on Armistice Day, as they were all WW1 vets.....

I thought it was exciting and COOOOOL!
