Cal,

This is almost "too much fun"!

“Too much wine too much song” reminded me of the “Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám”, when the 11th century Persian poet sang: “Wine, Women, and Song”

"Seasons in the Sun" was originally the Belgian song "Le Moribond" (French:“The Dying Man”) by Jaques Brel in 1961.  Lyrics were rewritten in English by American Rod McKuen in 1963, portraying a dying man's farewell to his loved ones. The Kingston Trio first recorded an English version of "Seasons in the Sun" in 1964. In 1974 it became a worldwide hit for Canadian singer Terry Jacks.

Seasons in the Sun    Terry Jacks

Goodbye to you, my trusted friend
We've known each other since we were nine or ten
Together we've climbed hills and trees
Learned of love and ABC's
Skinned our hearts and skinned our knees

Goodbye my friend, it's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
Pretty girls are everywhere
Think of me and I'll be there

We had joy, we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the hills that we climbed
Were just seasons out of time

Goodbye Papa, please pray for me
I was the black sheep of the family
You tried to teach me right from wrong
Too much wine and too much song
Wonder how I got along
Goodbye Papa, it's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
Little children everywhere
When you see them, I'll be there

We had joy, we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the wine and the song
Like the seasons, have all gone

We had joy, we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the wine and the song
Like the seasons, have all gone

Goodbye Michelle, my little one
You gave me love and helped me find the sun
And every time that I was down
You would always come around
And get my feet back on the ground

Goodbye Michelle, it's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that the spring is in the air
With the flowers everywhere
I wish that we could both be there

We had joy, we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the stars we could reach
Were just starfish on the beach

We had joy, we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the stars we could reach
Were just starfish on the beach

We had joy, we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the wine and the song
Like the seasons, have all gone

All our lives, we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the hills that we climbed
Were just seasons out of time

We had joy, we had fun
We had seasons in the sun

I have songs by both Kingston Trio and Terry Jacks if any are interested.

John

I think if anybody provided a car for the Beach Boys use it would be Charles 'Chick' Montgomery.  He had some really great rides.

Rex, photo quiz ... Peter Hurd on the left ... woman is possibly his wife, Henriette Wyeth. The location is possibly the Hurd Ranch in San Patricio (now a B&B I think).

Peter Hurd was born in Roswell and was a grad of NMMI..

One of his murals is now nearby...."The Future Belongs To Those Who Prepare For It" - this mural was originally located inside the Prudential Building in Houston, Texas, which has since been demolished. The mural was saved and relocated in 2010 to a new public library building in Artesia, New Mexico.

It seems to me that there was a stand there near the ranch or nearby that sold cherry cider back in the day?

I seem to remember at a very early age that there was a house on South Main where the Sears store is now.  The Hurd family lived there at one time in the past.

John Landis that cherry cider was absolutely delicious and refreshing!  I hadn't thought about it in years. My parents often went to the mountains and picked cherries. They canned them and we kids always hoped there would be some jars of cherries available when we came to visit.

Michael Hurd runs the Peter Hurd museum in Picacho
west of Hondo and Tinnie. Been a while since I stopped
there but it was pretty interesting at the time.

Peter Hurd's  Father Harold & Mother Lucy Hurd's  property was a huge ‘city’ square block which encompassed Sears, entire parking lots, and the strip mall with Furr’s Cafeteria (yummy). I ‘hurd’ from reliable sources there was a thick forest of tall trees on the westerly side of their estate bordering Pennsylvania street.

Cherry Cider!  in the 1950’s going to the mountains, there were 3 or 4 roadside stands where you could buy both regular and hard cider. One just had to ask for ‘hard’ cider.  After going in the back they’d pull out the Real McCoy!!  Almost as good tastin' as peach brandy!

The best Peter Hurd mural I've seen was a curved late 19th, early 20th-century panoramic view of the Pecos Valley. It was behind the bar at the Roswell Country Club. I don't know if it's still there, but I hope care is taken to preserve it!

Pat,

Tommy Weathers said there was a Hurd Fresco behind the bar at the old Nickson Hotel on east 5th. I believe he may have a picture of it. Would be great to post it!

Well, awhile back, I posted someone in our class had provided a couple of rods for a Beach Boys concert. (and Mike Curtis you had the wrong feller)

I just heard back from Sydney Allen: "Appreciate very much hearing from you. Yes, when The Beach Boys performed several years back in Longview Texas we had 2 cars on the stage, The 1932 Little Deuce Coupe and a 29 Roadster. How are things in Roswell, sorry I was unable to attend the class reunion. Stay COOL and tell everybody hello. Yes I still have both of these cars.

AND I'm jealous!(still) wink
