Colors seem a little bright for her work, though (that red!) . . .

(And that doll is a little anomalous in her oeuvre, right?  But that background has her name all over it.)

I think it was by Peter Hurd!  A few years ago, Cal and  Rex and I went to a special exhibit by Hurd at the Art Museum in Roswell, and that was one of the pics!  It is also a little bright for  Hurd, but I remember that painting well.  I think it was also part of an advertisement for the exhibit!

The por portrait is "Retrato de Praxedes Dominguez" painted by Peter Hurd. She married Joe Barela my uncle. The portrait was on exhibit at The Roswell Museum. Children that live in Roswell.

Saundra,

You have a good memory of us three seeing the painting of Praxedes Dominquez at Roswell Art Museum! Thank you for your comments! And for jogging my memory!

Andy,

I appreciate your background history on Praxedes. She was a beautiful girl. Your uncle was a lucky man! And you for having a beautiful aunt!

Here is a little more information on the painting.

September 2, (correction1903)  -  Roswell Daily Record (early newspaper)

Rex, by chance could that be September 2, 1903!
I am not sure what are we looking for? smiley

Not sure either, Sherry.  But there are some interesting 2 - 3 sentence pieces. Like Western Union has a Death notice telegram for Mr. T. J. Burton but has been unable to find him.  And the one for the lost alligator purse with a $20 bill in it....and they are asking for its return.

And the 4th page is even more interesting...

The intent is to show early history of Roswell by showing one of Roswell Daily Record's first newspapers in 1903.  If you go back and look carefully at the early historic street scene of Roswell south of 4th street posted by Bill L, you will find "Roswell Record" imprinted on the picture. Roswell Record newspaper was eventually purchased by the then owners of Roswell Daily Record in 1903.  Are the natives happy now?  wink
