Never got to go trick or treating away from our block and were only allowed to go to one house where an older couple lived.  She made popcorn balls that were so hard you could not even cut them.  Now our kids went downtown where our stores handed out candy in the afternoon and gave prizes for the best costumes.  Our block only had two houses close with older couples who knew our kids and filled their bags because they were their only kids coming.   Due to the downtown stores still giving out candy I have not had any kids come to our house except grandkids, and even they were to tired to come last year.

Sherry must be a fan of Robert De Niro...!

But right you are Sherry... naming the 1951 Hudson Hornet driven by De Niro!  Hey Car Guys... think we've got a real "Car Gal" here!

Doug Pulley had a 1950 Hudson Hornet.. We yanked out the back seat and put in a king-size mattress extending all the way into the trunk...

Rex and all other Peter Hurd fans. Have you ever seen this one? I'm no photographer and this photo does not do justice to the brilliance of the colors. Peter Hurd's name is printed in the bottom left corner, and on the back in pencil is printed on the frame, "Chihuahuita"  1929. It was not necessary, but an appraiser at the Antique Road Show verified it as one of Peter Hurd's paintings when the show was filmed in Santa Fe two years ago. He had no idea of the painting's existence.  Dewey Johnson

Wow Dewey, what a great picture!!
I would not have picked it out as being a Hurd picture.
He put a little of everything in it.
He just left out a person and a horse.(I am just joking)
I love the picture! Thanks for sharing!

Oh yes Rex I do love cars and wished I had the money
purchase many of a car from "our time" and a barn to
put them in!! wink

Dewey,

The picture of "Chihuahuita" 1929  should not surprise most Hurd fans.  Peter Hurd did spend time traveling, painting, and camping throughout Chihuahua and Sonora. I like how Hurd illustrates the rain showers with his ‘trademark’ windmill. The shanty houses in the picture are similar to those seen in the outskirts of Tijuana.  Thanks for contributing!

Sherry,  where is the red pickup truck in that picture... did he ride a horse "down Mexico way"?

REX, I WOULD SAY

A CHUSMAN MODEL 53 SCOOTER DEVELOPED FOR THE MILITARY AROUND WORLD WAR 2

Rex Booth

Bill L,

You are right.  I believe this particular Cushman was made in 1952. There was a model called the "Paratrooper" made during WW2.  The Paratrooper Cushman version was lighter and modified. It was parachuted behind enemy lines.  Then another paratrooper used it to set up covert communications. You saw a lot of them out at the base during and after the war. Jerry Floyd while at North Junior High owned a one with a red cover surrounding the engine and frame.

How'd you like to get this gas mileage...?

Paula Carl (Cowee Miller)

About 27 years ago I dated a man who had Cushmans. He belonged to a Cushman Club where the members brought their cycles and showed them off and rode together around the towns they visited. Didn't most "meter maids" use Cushmans as they called parking meter money and wrote tickets?

Paula,

You are absolutely right! The "Meter Maid Cushman".  They were also used as Police Paddy Wagons and by the Post Office!  I read that in 1968 Cushman eventually diversified into golf carts due to the influx of foreign motor bikes.

Check it out!

BOB. The "Meter Maid Cushman, I USE TO WALK DOWN THE main street JUST AHEAD OF THE METERMAIDS, DROP A COIN IN THE PARKING METERS THAT HAD A RED FLAG UP WHEN A CAR WAS PARKED IN THE SPOT.  I WAS TOLD THAT I COULDN'T DO THAT. ME AND MY WISE AS>> SAID WHY NOT, GOT TAKEN TO THE POLICE STATION ONE DAY. WAS TOLD NOT TO DO IT ANYMORE. I ASKED IF THERE WAS A LAW AGAINST IT. NO BUT IT'S HOW THE CITY MAKES MONEY.

10/29/23 06:07 AM #7461

Bill our local police chief got caught emptying the meters supposedly because no one was doing it but had no paperwork to show where the money went.  With several other reasons he was fired and the city removed the meters.  According to previous records he was pocketing about $1000.00 a week.
