Fred, I agree. My hometown has suffered a devastating flood. That makes me sad to see what has happened but Roswell is resilient and will make a comeback.

Fred, Just passing on my observations and evaluations of the damages. I have driven almost the entire City and found the most severe damages seem to be north of Alameda to College and east of Sycamore to Atkins. Not saying other areas were't hit, but just not as bad. Contrary to National and Albuqerque news the flooding was not caused or exacerbated by overflowing of the Pecos River. In fact the Pecos does not even flow through Roswell. In addition the Two Rivers Dam operators played no part in the flooding. The two rivers that are controlled by the dam are the Rio Hondo ( which runs through Roswell ) and the Rocky Arroyo ( which flows south towards Carlsbad ). I live 10 ft from the Hondo and at it's highest it was 6 ft from cresting. The Hondo and the Spring River are the only 2 rivers running through Roswell. The majority of the severe flood damages occurred near or within a short distance of the Spring River. The Spring River originates northwest of Roswell in the Pecos Flood Plain. Again our Media can't seem to check things out before reporting. I think Matt did a great job of showing the damages. I hope Cousin Don Ervin will chime in because in my feeble memory I remember a very sever flood along the Spring River somewhere around 50 years ago and at that time he lived just north of the river.

Cal, in 1953/1954, before the Dam was built, We had a flood.

Thanks Sherry. Didn't realize it was closer to 70 years rather than 50 but I knew there was a past flood other than the 100 year flood everyone referenced. Still waiting to see if Don remembers. Sad situation but great pictures.

Cal, you forget that the Berendo is now in the city and it did flood east of n. Main according to friends who live close.  I don't know where you live. but my nephew and family live close to the Hondo where it crosses Sunset and all the houses in their area were flooded with 3 feet of  water in their houses.                                                          Sherry, I was on the pd in 1969 when houses were washed against the Spring River bridge on N. Main and my partner  and I were pushing cars out of the middle of the street so emergency crews could get thru north of 2nd and Main. Our patrol unit had been the 1st as the water was knee deep.

John, you are right. Forgot they extended the City limits. Don't remember exactly when. Do you? The U S Geoligical & Underground Waters of Roswell Artesian Area classify the Berrendo River same type as the Spring River as they both originate near the same area of the Pecos Flood Plain. I'm not sure where your friends, that were flooded, live but I live directly on Sunset where the river crosses under Sunset and the river was 6ft from cresting at it's highest. I didn't drive around my area looking for damages because we had no damage and neither did our other house about 1/4 mile to the south. Sure didn't mean to omit any areas that were hit.

I believe this is the the flood Sherry and Don spoke about.

This is an original press photo. Roswell, New Mexico. Printing on left side of photo reads:

... “southwest section of Roswell, hit 10/7 by a flash flood originating in the Capitan and White mountains to the west. Three persons were reported dead and 4 missing early today. Property damage probably will total in the millions."

Cal, thanks for that info on the damaged areas in Roswell. It sounds like the house I was raised in at 605 E. 5th, 3 houses east of 5th & Garden, might well be in that area.

And that is sad.  My Dad built that house from the ground up over 3 summers.  We moved into the house in 1952.  My Dad was head of the Math Dept. at NMMI, and had the summer months off.

Nope, it's not mine.  It is another 1962 classmate's house, whom to date, has not claimed it or  is holding out on us.  Stay tuned to our next episode of  "How the Prop Turns"....

Cal, the flood was so large damage is still being reported. My wife's 65 graduate lives on  Garden about 2 blocks from the Berendo.  Our nephew lives between Union and Sunset and I went to his house 1 time years ago so I don't remember which street.  He is a conspirisy person and couldn't belive he called his mom to tell her about being flooded because he does not take or receive calls or mail.  My daughter said there was damage from LakeArthur all the way to Roswell when she went for a dr. appointment Wednesday.  In 1939 there was a flood that was so large that the draws west of 6 mile hill were blocked when my dad was coming home for my granddads funeral they had to camp out for 2 days.  Sometime between 62-66 a flash flood 16 feet high washed away the church, service station, and the houses at the S curve on 70 before you get to Fox cave.twin dam kept it from flooding Roswell.
