Rex the story about the candy stores was delightful!  I'm going to save that recipe and hopefully I'll have enough energy to make it in the near future.

MERRY CHRISTMAS everyone!!!

Paula,

I appreciate your nice comments re the "Sweet Roswell Confectionery story"!  I'm sure your squares will turn out just right!!

I certainly enjoyed the thick chocolate milkshakes from the soda fountain at Mitchell's Pharmacy next to Zinks!  Saturday afternoons a juke box always played with young adults 'cutting a rug' on that creaky wooden floor! (1959-62).

I'm wishing our classmates and friends a wonderful Holiday!!

I USE TO WORK, THEIR PART TIME.  PART OF MY JOB WAS CLEANING THE FLOOR.  YES SOMETIMES  HAD A MESS TO CLEAN UP AFTER INDIVIDUALS WERE CUTTING A RUG. ( A DRINK SPILLED ETC. ) 99.99% OF THE TIME, THE PERSON WHO SPILLED IT WOULD CLEAN IT UP.  STILLED HAD TO MOP THE FLOOR 🤣.

How many points does this buck have on its antlers?

Fred Miller

Rex, I'll bite.  I count 16 points on the buck.  But I am going to say 17 points simply because I know you too well.....alway have something up your sleeve...

Speaking of bucks, there has been a 12 pointer roaming around here lately.  Daughter and son in law who live on the property next to ours have several trail cams set up around the property.  Lately this beautiful buck has been showing up on their acreage.

Sights like the buck and lots of deer and other wildlife and especially the geese is why I quit hunting 35 years ago when we bought this property.  I sit outside and just watch the show.

Okay Fred is right about the devious question. Depending on where you are, the count method is different. The photo is blurry but I think there are 9 points on one side and 8 on the other. If this is correct in the East you would have a 17 point buck while in the West you would have a 9×8 buck. Again, depending on where you are the 4 small tines at the base of the antlers may or may not be counted. But in my humble opinion a tine is a point and should be counted. I got my 1st deer when I was 8 yrs old and he was a 8 pointer that dressed out at 180 lbs. We were on the east side of the Capitan mountain.

Hey deer hunters!  don't shoot the oh-so  "humble messenger" nor Bambi either...

The question was a simple one.  How many points on this buck.  Didn't ask for a disertation on the subject, but since it is so well thought out and presented, the post is deemed acceptable unless someone chimes in and has another 'point' (pun intended) of view.

So, it looks like we have two winners here. Fred for covering his hiney by saying 17 points and Calvin for his 9x8 (West of the Pecos) explanation.  Are we happy now...?

How many of you have driven past this massive array of radio telescopes?

These telescopes are located in the Plains of San Agustin on Highway 60 about 50 miles west of Socorro.  There are a total of 27 huge (80 ft. diameter) radio dishes pointed towards the sky.  An erie site to behold... as you are now entering the "Twilight Zone"...

Rex, I always wanted to see that array of radio telescopes but never had that opportunity. Love the caption!

Paula,

Years ago I would drive from Santa Cruz, California to New Mexico to visit my Mom. On serveral ocassions I'd take old backroads like Highway 60 from Phoenix to Globe, Arizona, to the plains of Augustin where the skyline would be filled with these massive telescopes! Stopped at a tiny cafe where they served the best apple and cherry pie! Located in none other than Pie Town, New Mexico!

Satellite view of the radio telescopes.  Just playing around on Google Earth.

Off to the left out of view is the "Array Operational Center (AOC).  Wished they had called it something else to give it different initials...

Years ago, I used to drive frequently from Albuquerque to Phoenix for a break from cold weather. I usually shunned the favored Interstate 40 route in favor of Interstate 25 south to Soccoro and then west on U.S. 60 into Arizona. This route allows you to drive as fast as you dare all the way to the state border as virtually no one else, including the State Police, was on this road.

As many times as I saw the Very Large Array (VLA) Telescope, I never ceased to gawk in admiration. In those days, you could leave the road and drive freely, on dirt roads, around and through the 27 moveable telescopes mounted on rails. You've likely seen photos of the VLA but probably misjudged its scale if you haven't seen it in person. Each tower is nearly 10 stories in height, pointed straight up, with the dish itself measuring over 80 feet in diameter. The VLA is situated on a desolate high desert plateau nearly 7,000 feet above sea level. If you are passing through Socorro, I highly recommend a ~ 50-mile side trip to the west to see the VLA in person.

I, of course, also remember Pie Town further west on U.S. 60. I read that, unfortunately, the Pie Town Cafe in Pie Town permanently closed in the summer of 2023 after their landlord refused to renew its lease. God knows why??? This used to be another favorite stop.
