Rex, I can bet you a dollar that we were in school that Thursday. We were raised tough!  Our town shut down yesterday because it was 21degrees overnight. And some schools are still shuttered.

That would be cool to see; frozen anything flying through the air. But way too cold for me too, Danny!

My Dad would say, "It's so cold out there the hair in your
Nose Freeze's" laugh HAHAHAHA!!

I overheard an old chap with a stiff upper-lip British accent say:  "It's colder than a well-digger's arse".

A bronc buster from Mesquite, Texas said: "If you want to keep your beer cold... put it next to my ex-wife's heart"...

The Times They Are A-Changin'

— I'm quoting Bob Dylan here.

We were a hardy lot growing up in Roswell ... we just didn't know it. We'd:

  • Play without concern in the Spring River and Hondo dry river beds
  • Ride our bikes all over town and far from home
  • Enjoy playground equipment that would never pass OSHA requirements today
  • Play unsupervised hide-and-seek until well after dark on many summer evenings
  • Play all kinds of sports without a single helmet, pad, mask, protector, guard, or other safety equipment

We skinned our hearts and skinned our knees

— I'm quoting Terry Jacks here.

Moms were certainly different too ... note:

Those were the days, my friend ...

When I lived out in the MT View area, use to take my Car Battery in side at night to keep warm. Also put a ;ite under the car to keep oil pan warm. Sometimes it worked but when it got down in to the 20 degrees It took some doing to get it started. Roswell had some cold weather at times.

The little Red Bird is a Cardinal!

Sherry,  You are right on!!  Congrates!!

Do you or anyone know what states in the US one will find more Cardinals?  ~ The Shadow

John Landess

Well, this am saw 23 cardinals around my bird feeders, but I would hate to venture a guess where the most of them live...

OH! speaking of Ventures, I just saw a program on the tube called "Stars with Guitars, The Ventures". It was great as well as full of facts. It made me wonder about my LPs, so I checked. I still have seven Venture albums, including the one "Play Guitar with the Ventures". Unfortunately, it didn't help me become a star!! Oh well...

Rex, loved the Northern Lights. One of the high points of living in Alaska in the winter months. My brother now sends me photos when they are super active there.

Another Aurora Borealis...

Would love to know where that pic was taken!  Looks like maybe a small fishing village on the right?

I think the Cardinal can probably be found
in almost all states.
Here's one, how many States have the Cardinal
as their State Bird??

Rex Booth

Sherry,

There are several Cardinals in Arizona and St. Louis...
can ya name them...?

I spent a summer in Indiana visiting my grandparents on my Dad's side. Saw flocks of Cardinals near Purdue University and Wabash River iin Lafayette. I understand states with the most Cardinals are back east?

Here's a South Carolina Northern Cardinal

It's 55 degrees where I live in Northern  CA-- about 80 miles below Lake Tahoe. That's about normal this time of year.
Loved all of your posts about Roswell's history! I'd love to make a visit. !!!

NFL Football team the St Louis Cardinals from
1960-1987 then they moved to Arizona and became
The Arizona Cardinals NFL Football team!!

Lies therein...

Yes, the St. Louis Cardinal Football team moved to Arizona. But Ah...

Let's not forget the St. Louis Cardinal "Baseball" team! The Cardinals started out as the Brown Stockings in 1875. Renamed the St. Louis Browns in 1882, then the St. Louis Cardinals in 1900.

I remember listening to the St. Louis Cardinal games on the radio, including the NY Yankees & Brooklyn Dodgers during the 1950's early '60's!  You could hear the wood sound of the bat when a homer was hit! (Of course it was the announcer hitting a wooden mallet to create the sound). Real exciting.. just like you were there in person! The St. Louis Cardinals are second to NY Yankees in winning the most Word Series!

Another of our Roswell baseball favorites was Tom Jordan Sr. (Tommy Jordan's dad) who played a couple of seasons with the St. Louis Browns.

Karla,  Thanks for posting!

When I lived in Santa Cruz I took Highway 50 to snow ski at Heavenly Valley.  Passed by your town many times.! My son lives in Folsom just down the road a ways from you. Which reminds us.... "I hear a train a-comin'... a-comin' down the track.."

Paula,

Thanks for  your post. It is really nice to know the mating habits of Cardinals. I know doves will mate for life. I have a least 25  Mourning Doves that roost in the elm tree of my backyard. I love to hear their sweet soft cooing song. I have one Mourning dove who migrates up north in early May. It will announce itself by sitting on the roof peak of my next door neighbor's  house and begin its souful song.  It comes back to the same roof around 8 am for 3-4 days in a row before mating season ritual begins.

Paula Carl (Cowee Miller)

Rex, I did not know that mourning doves mated for life. Why didn't Mr. Lugenbill mention that in my biology class?  Seems like all I remember about biology was dissecting an earthworm and a frog.
