Paula,

That Polar Bear Train must be a real trip for the kiddies going to the North Pole in where...?  Rusk, Texas to see Santa Claus!  I've always wanted to take the train on the Canadian Railway from Vancouver, B.C. to Lake Louise and Banff, Alberta... similar to the beautiful winter snow scenes in "Dr. Zhivago".

Sherry,

I saw you in the Washington Avenue 3rd-grade picture. You are showing off those"pearly whites"!  There are a few classmates I recognize by name.

1st row: Terry Green, Mike Fields, Linda Dumas

2nd row: Fred Tucker - far right, partially hidden

3rd row: Sherry Hester (don't recall names of girls next to you), Demos Metarelis far right

4th row: Jack Hankins, Mike Ingram, Nicky McMillan

5th row: Sharon Chewning, Harvey (tall dude), Danny Caussey, Jack Waxler, Rex, Claudia Phillips

Does anyone recognize other classmates??

The 'cute curly-haired girl' who showed up at my house with a new Donald Duck bike. Hint: She was "Homecoming Queen" our Senior year.

Homecoming Queen was Charlotte; Charlotte did not have red hair(?). Her hair was brown.

1975 we traveled from Houston to Chicago on Amtrak. What a great trip. Then we caught the Canadian train in Chicago and traveled to Toronto.  That trip was amazing.  The CN employees were so much fun and the scenery was magnificent.  My dream has been to take the train from coast to coast in Canada but now my health isn't good enough to take that on and I hate that.  As a child I often rode the train from Roswell to Carlsbad to visit cousins there.  If you've never slept on the train that is quite something, especially if you have the joy of sleeping in the pull-down upper berth.  Getting in was quite the learning experience and one I will always remember!

Are Druids among us in Roswell?

Could be… at “The Henge”.  Locals call it “Roswell’s Stonehenge”

Druids, including the Hopi of Arizona, Zuni of New Mexico, Romans, and others across the world celebrate Winter Solstice on December 21. “It is the shortest day and longest night of the year.

Thought I recognized a few of you early this Sunday morning...

The "Henge” was created by Herbert J. Goldman for Donald B. Anderson in 1963.

For all Y'all non-believers:

Take East Pine Lodge Road. Turn Right on Atkinson, which turns into Crooked Creek Road. One can catch a glimpse of the Henge from the road looking to the left a few hundred feet away. The Henge is located on Private Property. Be careful! As some carry pitchforks!!

The Story of “Jingle Bells”

Did you know “Jingle Bells” was originally named “One Horse Open Sleigh?

It was written by James Lord Pierpont back in "1857"!!

"The Night Before Christmas"

Iconic holiday poem “The Night Before Christmas” is attributed to Clement Clarke Moore, but descendants of New York poet Henry Livingston Jr., as well as some academics, say he's the true author. (Corbis/Getty Images)

What is know is this: Account of a Visit from St. Nicholas — as it was first called — was originally published, anonymously, in New York's Troy Sentinel newspaper on Dec. 23, 1823.

Not only did the poem become a hit, but according to the New York Historical Society, its description of old St. Nick "permanently connected St. Nicholas to Christmas and led to our idea of Santa Claus." (It also established the names of Santa's eight tiny reindeer — all except for Rudolph.)

A Visit from St. Nicholas

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house

Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;

The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,

In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;

The children were nestled all snug in their beds;

While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;

And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,

Had just settled our brains for a long winter's nap,

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,

I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter.

Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow,

Gave a lustre of midday to objects below,

When what to my wondering eyes did appear,

But a miniature sleigh and eight tiny rein-deer,

With a little old driver so lively and quick,

I knew in a moment he must be St. Nick.

More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,

And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name:

"Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now Prancer and Vixen!

On, Comet! on, Cupid! on, Donder and Blitzen!

To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!

Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"

As leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,

When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky;

So up to the housetop the coursers they flew

With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too—

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof

The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.

As I drew in my head, and was turning around,

Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,

And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;

A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,

And he looked like a pedler just opening his pack.

His eyes—how they twinkled! his dimples, how merry!

His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!

His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,

And the beard on his chin was as white as the snow;

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,

And the smoke, it encircled his head like a wreath;

He had a broad face and a little round belly

That shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly.

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,

And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;

A wink of his eye and a twist of his head

Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,

And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,

And laying his finger aside of his nose,

And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,

And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.

But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight—

“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”

Noting the beautiful photo Rex posted, a White Christmas? was not what happened in Roswell.

However, in watching the national weather channel this morning, I saw where Eddy and Chaves Counties had BLIZZARD warnings today!!! Wow, might be a white New Years in store.. makes me think of the big snow we had back in 1960 or was it 61...

Happy New Year to all.

John,  that big snow was in 1960.  I took a black & white picture of my parent's '57 Plymouth buried in white stuff almost hip deep!!  Thanks for the memories!

In today's paper. Does anyone like windmills?

Freezing fog shrouded this windmill on White Mill Road on a chilly Tuesday morning after the Roswell area missed out on snow predicted for Monday.  J. Hilley photo

 Temperatures in the 70s are expected to return by New Year’s Day

I seem to recall a large snowfall 25-30 or so years ago.  We came into town 4-5 days afterwards, started seeing snow on the ground about 30 miles east of town.  Streets in Roswell had been cleared.  There were 8-10 ft piles of snow all over town.

Mom lived across from ENMMC, and the parking lot had over a dozen huge piles of snow.

Fred,

Yes, you are right!  T'was a big snow storm about 30 years ago. In 1997.

Then again in 2015

Winter Storm Goliath  - Dec 27-31 (5 days of snow)  When Roswell received more than 20 inches of snow, including a record 12.4 inches in a single day on December 27, 2015.  It caused significant disruption and prompted National Guard assistance to help many folks dig out.  I had 4.5 feet of snow on the roof of my home! Caused damage to the covered patio. With 80 mph winds that created  5 to 15 foot snow drifts in Chaves County!  Reminds me o' the time I spent panning during the gold rush of the Yukon in 1849... 🙄
