Danny Cathey

That elevator operator was me, at least in 1960-61, after school and on Saturdays.  Jimmy Lee was the operator before me.  My direct boss was the janitor.  He fired me one day when he was almost to drunk to stand up and to this day, I am not sure why I was fired.

Fred, when I worked at First National Bank, I reported to Erwin Marsh. He was, I think, the "head cashier". The officers were around in their offices but I rarely got to interact with them. I can't remember their names.

Danny and/or Jimmy, thanks for the elevator rides; I'm sure you took me the top floor of the J.P. White Building, where J.P. White's office was, a number of times. My mother worked there.

Speaking of getting fired ... when I first started at First National Bank, my two primary tasks were rolling coins and handling requests for check copies by locating them on microfilm and printing copies. Both were boring tasks.

When I got promoted to microfilming checks at First National, I remembered how tedious searching the film was. To make the task a little more interesting for those that came behind me, I'd occasionally interspersed a Playboy Magazine photo among the checks.

This didn't come to the attention of management until I had quit to go to college. I latter found out that Erwin Marsh commented that "It was lucky I no longer worked at the bank or I would have been fired!" Erwin was an elder at his church and obviously didn't have much of a sense of humor.

Pat, I remember Ervin Marsh as a man who did not have a humorous in his body.  He was strictly by the book, rarely smiled.  His wife, Virginia,  on the other hand, was totally opposite.  She was a teacher, but I can't remember where.

Who was the officer that bought a new Cadillac every 2 years and always parked it right outside the side entrance on 3rd St?  He was always bragging about who he had a date with the night before.  He was close to 60 and liked the younger girls.

John L.  made this "Historical" contribution.

Let’s give a nod and “tip of the hat” to John!

We are going to up the ante of 10 points to anyone posting a historical contribution.  John L, you are awarded "10 points"! Keep track of your 'geetus'.

An early Roswell First National Bank 20.00 note (1882)

The First National Bank in Roswell operated as a Territorial bank before New Mexico became a state, making its early 1882 notes rare and desirable to collectors. According to Heritage Auctions, banknotes of that era are collector’s items today.

What is the value of a Roswell First National 1882 bank note?

a. 4,000.00 or more

b. 100.00

c. 200.00 to 500.00

d. All of the above

e. None of the above

Sherry was the 'first' to name the First National Bank building. 10 points for Sherry!

Followed by Fred Miller and Pat Riley who both had interesting jobs at that same bank. Pat gave a historical overview of the Bank building, JP White building, and the Hinkle building.  Should we award Pat 10 points for his contribution?  Sure, why not.

Paula Carl (Cowee Miller)

Very interesting information everyone. I hadn't thought about the bank being a territorial bank. I'll guess C. On the value of the bank note.

Someone asked me yesterday about NMMI. Was it know by another name when first established?

03/09/26 06:28 PM #8820

Rex Booth

Paula,

Yes, back in the day, NMMI had another name.  Looks like Paula has created another historical question.  10 points for Paula!

Classmates,  what is the original name of NMMI?  And what 'year' was it established? Who wants another 10 points?

Here's a historical question ...

Pictured below is, purportedly, the first building erected in Roswell built in 1869 ... the photo was obviously, based on its condition, taken some years after that.

Questions:

1) What was the building?

2) Who owned it?

Another historical question about Roswell and NMMI

Who on this list below attended NMMI?

  1. Conrad Hilton
  2. Roger Staubach
  3. Sam Donaldson
  4. Will Rogers

The answer is all of the above except Will Rogers who's son was a cadet there.

Sherry Hester (Trasp)

I think the First National Bank note isn't worth
anything so that is E. It doesn't have
"Federal Reserve Note" And I think it has to
have that on it to be worth anything.
Now with that being said It is actually is worth
what someone will pay or it!! So or a collector
it might be worth a lot!!wink

Pat I wanted to guess!! smiley

My bad ... next time I'll post the answer later ... sorry!

This quiz is a two-part question:

What is the original name of NMMI?  And what 'year' was it established?  (See earlier post 8820)

To answer the Question of first house built
and who owned it. I would have to Google
it to answer so I don't know! I want to cheat
but I won't!! HAHAHA!! I'm interested so I guess
i'll have to look it up the not tell the answer!!!

Sherry,

You could go down to the Historical Society 200 N. Lea (old J.P. White house)  and show them the picture.  If they don't know, walk next door to the Historical Archive Building. It's just a sug.

Most of the information being passed today IS from the internet.  So if you want to use a different search engine than Google... as Google tracks your searches.  Other popular search machine options are "Brave" or Bing. "Brave" does not track your internet searches.

Good Sleuthing!!

Yet another Roswell historical quiz question

The question: What are these men doing?

Hint ... it involves a well known Roswell resident.

Fred Miller

The vehicle looks too old to be part of erecting the TV tower east of town.  In the back of my mind I remember that Goddard conducted some tests near Roswell in the 30's or 40's.  Possibly related to that?

03/10/26 02:18 PM #8832

Paula Carl (Cowee Miller)

I think those men are erecting something to do with the Goddard rocket. That looks like part of the tower that's at the museum.

03/10/26 02:37 PM #8833

Patrick Riley

Paula and Fred both nailed it!

It is an early rocket launch tower being erected by Goddard's crew. I think it is a much more early stage launch tower than the one at the museum. These were definitely pre-NASA days!

Goddard lived in Roswell twice: from 1930 to 1932 and again from 1934 to 1942. He moved from Massachusetts to Roswell to get more open space for his rocket tests.

Here are two photos of Dr. Robert H. Goddard ... the second one shows a more refined later stage rocket being towed by Goddard personally.

Not many will likely know this, but during his stay in Roswell, Goddard lived at 1501 East Mescalero Road (well north of Country Club Road and east of Main Street). I'm only aware of this as I dated a girl during my senior year at RHS whose family lived in the old Goddard home.

Gee Pat,

You certainly got around!! No wonder you have so much information!wink

John, I could only wish I got around a lot!

Google is much better traveled, and more knowledgeable, than I am.

Regarding search machines lately.

My experience with "Gemini" is 10 times better than the typical google search. Gemini has helped locate hard-to-find parts and part numbers for my 1980 Mercedes. Yep, Ah iz another classic car aficionado. If you are not satisfied with a Gemini search answer, you can challenge the search machine so it will eventually give up the goodies.

Pat,  the Goddard post was great!

Way to go!  Paula and Fred!  You both get 10 points, and Pat gets 10 points as well.

Still another Roswell historical question

Look at the two Roswell area photos below.

Photo 1:

Photo 2:

Questions:

  • What/where is photo 1?
  • What/where is photo 2?
  • What do the two photos have in common?

Classmates, the answer to Pat's "quiz" has not been answered... now's your chance to get those points!!
