Patrick, you and Rex are correct about the Hotel Del Coronado! I had the privilege of performing a lot of work on the Hotel when it was owned by Larry Lawerence.We did both restoration and remodeling projects. The quality and detail of the original construction is displayed in only a few structures in the entire US. There has been so many famous people that stayed there you would need a 500 page tablet to list them all. Rex since you had to take the ferry when you went there in 1969 you must have just missed the opening of the Coronado Bay Bridge which opened in Sept 1969.

Lawrence was a pretty tough guy to work for, very demanding and impatient but we must have met his demands as he also had us do work on his private home which was 2 blocks away from the Hotel. We were actually working at his home when ,then president, Bill Clinton came to visit him so we had to pull off the job for a week. You are also right about Brunch in the Crown Room. Pretty pricey ($75.00 per person ) but they have everything you can think of available, lobster, caviar etc. If anyone gets a chance to try it, then do it.

Cal,

I was living in El Cajon and working for an LPG company in the industrial areas of San Diego and Mission Bay. I married a French Canadian lady in Montreal in February 1969. Denise and I visited the Hotel Del Coronado in early spring, at the end of April. We did see the bridge under construction, but it was blocked for any auto traffic. That was one massive bridge! I admire the architect who designed it which became the solution for the Navy and their huge ships to pass underneath it. I understand the Navy had resisted any bridge being built for years, because they didn't want their ships trapped inland or have to move to another location. I figured you had been to the Hotel several times after you moved from Los Angeles to Lakeside and eventually started your company. The Coronado was nice feather in your cap, Cal.

Sherry and Charline.

Thank you VERY much.

I could only dream I'd been to all those places (there's 250 of them) ... YouTube channel is a pure commercial side hustle. All photo were puchased from stock photo services.

I appreciate both your efforts!

Riddle me this.....

I am 6 times as old as my grandson.

In 20 years, I will be twice as old as him.

How old are we now?

04/25/26 06:59 PM #8975

Patrick Riley

Fred, I called Mrs Ackerman ... my South Junior High algebra teacher and she helped me work this out:

Let the grandson's current age = x, and your current age = 6x.

In 20 years:

Grandson is: x + 20
You are: 6x + 20

At that point, you'll be twice his age:

6x + 20 = 2(x + 20)
6x + 20 = 2x + 40
4x = 20
x = 5

So right now:

Grandson is 5 years old
You are 30 years old

PS: In junior high we were looking for x. I can believe we still are!

Good answer Pat!  I also had Mrs Ackerman and loved Algebra 1 & 2 with her!

Pat,

Your answer is correct.  I think you left out one or two steps.

I solved it the old fashioned way....I counted on my fingers and toes to get the answer.

Fred,

Good thing you are not a "natural" Tennessean!!!

I mean with 6 toes on a foot, etc, It takes algebra to a new level!

Regarding the algebraic formula in post #8975 to determine the age of grandson and granddad.

A few more formulas to make it complete. See the formulas in bold.

Grandson's current age = x, and your current age = 6x.

In 20 years:

Grandson is: x + 20
You are: 6x + 20

At that point, you'll be twice his age:

6x + 20 = 2(x + 20)
6x + 20 = 2x + 40

Subtract 2x from both sides of equation bringing all terms with (x) to the left side:
(6x - 2x) + 20 = 40
4x + 20 = 40
4x = 40-20
4x = 20
x = 5

Grandson is 5 years old
You are 30 years old

Now wasn't this fun? Thanks Fred and Pat!!

04/26/26 12:35 PM #8981

Sherry Hester (Trasp)

So You Algebra Scholars, If I have this right
You are 30 and Your Grandson is 5! OK!
That makes You 25 when he was born.
So how old does that make Your Child,
who is the parent to your Grandchild!!??
I'm no Mathematician!

Great question Sherry!!'

04/26/26 04:41 PM #8983

Fred Miller

Regarding the age of the grandfather and grandsoneveryone is assuming they live in the U.S.  In some countries children get married as young as 12 or 13.  I do not agree with that practice, but it does happen.

But for the purpose of the riddle, the country is a moot point.

Fred, I see that you are STILL having fun crunching numbers.

I did have one question about your recently added photo. Is that one of those AI jobs, where you put your head into an existing photo. If so, let me know how you do that. I want to stick my head on Rocky's bod!!! (Rocky Balboa) That would make me look slightly younger!

John, that is really me.  My brother has a box at Cowboy Stadium.  We were at a game one time when the cheerleaders came by asking if I was available for a hug.  Who am I to turn down a Cowboy Cheerleader...

Here's a puzzle challenge, though not a mathematical one.

A man took the weekend off to engage in his favorite sport ... hunting. He arrived in the wild late Friday night with only the time to pitch his tent and get some sleep.

He was excited early the next morning when he left his tent, rifle in hand, and immediately found bear tracks which he followed for one mile due south until he lost the trail.

He then turned left and proceeded dead east hoping to pick up the bear's trail again.

After walking east for a mile, he was delighted when he again picked up fresh bear tracks now heading straight north. He followed these tracks for a mile when he literally.stumbled upon the bear which he promptly shot and killed.

It wasn't until then, that he noticed the bear had returned to his campsite where he originally discovered the tracks earlier and that he was, fortuitously, only a few feet from his tent making it easy to skin and dress the bear carcass.

And now, finally, we get to the question that makes this somewhat long tale a puzzle ...

What color was the bear?
