Patrick Riley

Here's a puzzle challenge, though not a mathematical one.

A man took the weekend off to engage in his favorite sport ... hunting. He arrived in the wild late Friday night with only the time to pitch his tent and get some sleep.

He was excited early the next morning when he left his tent, rifle in hand, and immediately found bear tracks which he followed for one mile due south until he lost the trail.

He then turned left and proceeded dead east hoping to pick up the bear's trail again.

After walking east for a mile, he was delighted when he again picked up fresh bear tracks now heading straight north. He followed these tracks for a mile when he literally.stumbled upon the bear which he promptly shot and killed.

It wasn't until then, that he noticed the bear had returned to his campsite where he originally discovered the tracks earlier and that he was, fortuitously, only a few feet from his tent making it easy to skin and dress the bear carcass.

And now, finally, we get to the question that makes this somewhat long tale a puzzle ...

What color was the bear?

Cal Turley

Patrick, assuming he was hunting legally and was not in Alaska, Canada or Russia the bear was black.

04/28/26 06:05 PM #8988

Patrick Riley

Cal, the bear was not black ... sorry.

The answer is actually somewhat obfuscated in my post but it is there.

Have another look.

Good luck!

The bear was white. The man's campsite was at the North Pole.

By walking a mile due south from his campsite, then a mile east, and then a mile due north back to his campsite, he walked a triangle, hence the North Pole.

While on the subject of bears... The California State flag symbol is a "grizzly bear".  And despite grizzlies being hunted to extinction, the grizzly bear was named the official State Animal in 1953...

Quiz:

1. When were the final years of grizzly bears in California?

2, What famous frontier hunter called them "Bar's"?

04/29/26 08:58 AM #8991

Fred Miller

Not to brag, but I just walked into another room in my house.

And I remembered what I went in there for.

Sherry Hester (Trasp)

Grizzly bears are not
endangered in California because they
are
extinct in the state
. The last California
grizzly was killed in 1924. While they are on
the state flag, no wild grizzly bears have
lived in California for over a century, although
recent studies suggest it is feasible to reintroduce them.

One of my Favorite TV shows and charcaters was
Daniel Boone was famous for saying "Bar" rather than Bear!!

04/29/26 11:42 AM #8993

Patrick Riley

Fred, you're dead right ... tent had to be at the north pole to get back to it in a triangular path. So, at the north pole, the bear could only be a white polar bear.

Congrats!

Sherry,

Hot Dang!  You nailed both quizes!!!  Congratulations!!  yes yes yes

I understand Daniel Boone worked along with a lot of Scotts and Irish folks in Tennessee so he likely used the spelling and pronunciation "bar" (or "bahr") because it reflected the regional Appalachian/Tennessee frontier dialect of the 18th century.

This spelling is famously associated with a tree carving attributed to Boone:

"D. Boon cilled a Bar on tree in the year 1760"

Daniel Boone was also one my favorite TV shows along with Davy Crockett!

I am sure most of you are wondering what our favorite Tenny-See member has for his observations on Dan'l Boonee... Oh but wait, John L is in "Ah'll-ask-her now... eh?

Rex, re Hamms Beer (present at every one of my college frat parties as a fraternity brother's family owned Southwest Distributing, the New Mexico distributor of Hamms).

Hamm’s beer was first brewed in 1865 in St. Paul, Minnesota. German immigrant Theodore Hamm established the brewery in the Phalen Creek valley (specifically in the Swede Hollow area) after taking over an existing, struggling brewery. The brand became famous for the slogan "From the Land of Sky Blue Waters".

So answer is: Minnesota!

Pat Riley "Is In His Zone"!!

Pat gave the "correct" answer including some interesting history about Minnesota including the founder of Hamm's beer... Theodore "Hamm".  Do you 'spose our friend in "Ah'll-ask-her will have any cute remarks about Theodore's last name..?  wink

(I borrowed that 'zone' phrase from Emmett Smith of the Dallas Cowboys. During an interview after a game when he gained more than 100 yards carrying the ball, Emmett said: "I'm In My Zone"!!)

Boy oh boy!! Pat has certainly had an fortunate life, a frat buddy with free beer!!

About all I remember about Hamm's beer when combined with a raw egg and a shot of tobasco, it made a fair hangover repair in the morning...Hmmm, Hamm and egg breakfast? Of course, I never had to try that.

I am still in ten-o-sea, but will be out in the state of NM about the middle of this month. My grand-daughter is graduating from UNM with a double major and two Bachelor degrees. Not bad for 4 years!!

Following that I will head on up to the GREAT State to check on the fishing.

**IMPORTANT**  RHS 1962 Website

Our “Odometers” are now all north of 80!  Back at RHS, we were all looking “forward” but did you ever think about being an "octogenarian"? I certainly didn't. Now we're much more likely to be looking “back” rather than forward. Over all those years, we've seen many things come and, more particularly, go. We've lost friends, family, lovers, beloved pets, homes, jobs, and many many material things. One thing we've never lost, though, are our “memories. I think most of you will agree that among our best memories are our years at Roswell High School!

The RHS alumni website is all about memories. It not only revives forgotten ones, it allows us to share and discuss past memories with old friends and classmates. We may be in the winter of our years but looking back with fondness somehow makes us all younger!

Please consider helping keep the memories and the RHS1962 website alive. It's time to renew the site's subscription ... a $530 fee. Your contribution here will be greatly appreciated.   "Donate Here"

Need more information? Let us know by selecting "Contact Us" (left column).

The website renewal is due May 25

Every contribution, even a “single dollar”, is needed and appreciated.
From a financial point of view, life hasn't treated us all equally. If you can't or choose not to contribute, know that a contribution from you is not expected or demanded. Please continue to visit, post on, and enjoy the RHS1962 website!

Your classmates and I thank you for your consideration and support!!

Thanks for all you do to keep our RHS website up and running, Rex. My check is in the mail. Come on RHS class of '62 let's make this happen.

I made my donation to the RHS website using PayPal.  It was super easy.

I want to encourage the other members to make a donation.  It does not have to be a large donation, just an amount you can live with, an amount you feel comfortable donating  to help keep the site up and running.

05/04/26 10:19 AM #9002

Joe Treat

Clicking on the website provided does not take me anywhere to contribute.  It only lets me message Rex.

Joe, please go back and re-read the donation page. The donation page gives clear specific instructions on how to donate.  Let us know the amount of your donation and the method you wish to choose: Pay Pal or Mail a check.  Once we receive the method you choose we can provide you with more information how to transmit the funds. Why are the "two-steps" being used?  For security reasons to protect both classmates and RHS 1962 website. If you need more information you may reach me by email or by clicking "Contact Us".

I do not understand why you chose to make this an issue on the Message Forum, since I emailed you at 7:56 am this morning answering your questions you had asked about donations.  Check your email.

Classmates, we normally do not post obituaries on the Message Forum. We typically post obituaries "In Memory" and notify all classmates.

However, since our website is experiencing a temporary glitch with emailng all classmates, I have posted Danny Thompson's "Notification of Passing".  Classmates may select "In Memory" (in the left column) to view Danny Thompson's obituary.

A "Celebration of Life" is being held May 9, 2026  (See details below)

Danny was our neighbor for a few years.  He had a major impact on my brother Chuck whio would be considered a master mechanic today.  Parts from Danny's Tool and Die business went to the moon.   He was unique and will be missed.

Ann,

You and other classmates may post in Danny's "In Memory" comment section below his obituary. Thank you.

Woodrow Wilson proclaims

the first

Mother’s Day holiday

On May 9, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson issues a presidential proclamation that officially establishes the first national Mother’s Day holiday to celebrate America’s mothers.

The idea for a “Mother’s Day” is credited by some to Julia Ward Howe (1872) and by others to Anna Jarvis (1907), who both suggested a holiday dedicated to a day of peace. Many individual states celebrated Mother’s Day by 1911, but it was not until Wilson lobbied Congress in 1914 that Mother’s Day was officially set on the second Sunday of every May. In his first Mother’s Day proclamation, Wilson stated that the holiday offered a chance to “[publicly express] our love and reverence for the Mothers of our country.”
