Harvey,

Those beer can openers sounds interestng.  Can you take a few pictures and post them on the Message forum?  Or email the pictures to me and I'll post 'em.

I beleive it was 1935 when Krueger's Beer made beer in steel cans.

Here is a video of the history on beer made in cans you might find entertaining.

Hey Rex---how much more do you need?

05/12/26 09:18 AM #9016

Fred Miller

Jim,

I would guess somewhere in the range of $130 to $140 is still needed.

I would encourage those who have not yet donated to do so.  Check between the couch cushions for loose change.  Check between your mattresses. Check that coffee can that has been on the upper shelf in the pantry for many, many years...and you have wondered why.

Any amount can help this special group of people reach the goal so we can still get together and enjoy each others' company.

Did you happen to look at the Home Page?  See if your 'name' is on the "RHS Hall of Fame".  Gee, that kind of rhymes.  Sounds like a country-western song in the making...?

Texas has a state vehicle.  Can anybody guess what it is?

A hint....it passed closely by Roswell several times in the late 1800's.

05/14/26 07:46 AM #9025

Rex Booth

Fred,

Could that Texas "state vehicle" be the one that Studebaker, the auto manufacturing company made back in 1860 for the Army during the Civil War?

Wasn't it Charles Goodnight who drove cattle by Roswell creating the "Goodnight Trail" in 1866?  On the Goodnight trail, cattle was herded from Ft. Belknap west of Ft. Worth pretty much following the present day highway 380 to the Pecos River 6 miles east of Roswel, then north to Ft. Sumner.  Later on, that trail extended into Colorado.

Now, is it true Goodnight had a chef that used that "Texas vehicle" to prepare meals...? 🤠

05/14/26 01:48 PM #9026

Fred Miller

Rex, you are almost there.  The Studebaker was converted to something else, and that "something else" eventually became the Texas State Vehicle.  And Goodnight's cook prepared meals out of it.

I think I have all but handed you the answer...

05/14/26 04:27 PM #9027

Rex Booth

Fred,

I know the answer, but decided to drop more clues to your quiz. To let other classmates get in on the fun!  Another obvious clue is Studebaker made wagons back in 1860.  Final clue: What was the first name of the tall actor who played "Geronimo" 1962 movie. It was rather humorous seeing a tall-blond blue-eyed man playing the part of a native american...

.... but alas, our classmates are no where to be seen...

Wow, Sherry you are on a roll!!

*Ding*....*Ding*....*Ding*

Sherry got it right.  The Goodnight cook took the Studebaker wagon and converted it to what he wanted to work out of.  It became known as a  chuckwagon.

Who first invented  Ice Cream? yum yum!!

05/15/26 06:20 PM #9031

Paula Carl (Cowee Miller)

The historical record says the Chinese invented ice cream during the Tang dynasty aroung 618 AD. But as usual, I'm sure you have another answer in mind.
Many of usvgrew up with homemade ice cream-freezer, ice, rock salt. Sitting on the freezer so our weight held the ice cream maker still so the final cranks on the freezer handle could be made. Then waiting a little while until the ice cream set up. Those sre such sweet memories.

Thanks for the MEMORIES, Paula!!

I loved those days and the Ice cream.
Then they attached electric to it and
Ice cream on every corner!! Easy to
get and not so much work!

Paula,

Yes, you are spot on!

And yes, it is 'usual' for me to provide more information or trivia on a given subject, hopefully to inspire other classmates to join in on the fun and post their thoughts.

Fact or Fiction: Ice cream was invented by "31 Flavors"....

Ice cream evolved over thousands of years. Ancient civilizations like the Chinese, Greeks, Romans, and Persians enjoyed early frozen desserts (such as snow mixed with honey and fruit) dating as far back as 200 BC  and before.  I understand the Chinese took buffalo milk mixed with flour and camphor.  It was called 'cream ice' over those centuries.

Yep, a lot of nice memories of family reunions making ice cream.  I still have that ice cream maker of the '50's in my storage room.  Those manual 'hand-crank' ice cream makers would get hard to turn as the ice cream hardened.  Everyone took turns cranking the handle because as ten year olds, our arms would give out within a few minutes!

Who else has memories of making ice cream or  that special treat at "Dairy Queen"?

The Dairy Queen on South Main, Mike Carson worked there through high school. My favorites were a cherry shake or a Coke freeze.
