PIcture of:  Primm  Drug -  West 2nd & Union - During the 1960's

It's now a huge vacant lot that encompassed Mike Ingram's Dad's Navajo Motel. MIke's Dad would let some of us swim in the motel pool!  Saundra Bennett's Mom owned a hair salon behind Primm.  Life was good in the slow lane...!

Dandy Don, Roy, and your Babes had a sticker on your van that probably read:  "Come on baby, dig my Herbs"...   wink

A comment on the Picture of Montgomery Wards on the home page,  My Mother and Robert "Bobby" Rollins's Mother (I am actually not sure about his Mother) But His Sister-in-Law for sure worked there in the 60's! I had a lot of clothes and "Stuff" from there! ~~Sherry~~

The autos passing in front of Monkey Wards caught my attention.  The taxi cab crossing Main on 2nd looks like a 1948 Plymouth.  The vehicle heading south on Main in front of Wards looks like a 1949 Buick Special Sedanet. Several cars from the 1940's and one from 1930's.

Then again, our friend 'way up north'  in "Ah'll-ask-her"  may decide to chime in with his sooth-saying, but long on tooth, opinion...  laugh

Rex, Now you know I would never try to cut in on your smooth soothing!

Apparently though, with this CHINA vius, things have been pretty restricted, including entries on this page. I would have thought more folks would have been on here, since there is not much else going on...except for all you fellers doing all the lady's chores that you always said you would do when you had time!

Here in the Great Land things have been a bit crazy. Every year in July, the state opens up several rivers to "subsistence" fishing (ie. using nets in the river and along the banks). This year since it seems there are a lot of folks not working, they have flocked down to the Kenai. The river looks like the Normandy invasion!! And this was a weekday.

(and once again I will have to plea to Rex to post the photo as I seem incapable crying)

Well well well. Our Nawthin' Comrade near the Russian zone appears to be alive and somewhat kicking. Ah'll hafta hand it to No-nookie of the North for braving those chilly-willy waters of the Kenai Rivah.  I have a question fer ya.  How could those Inuit's drag their nets with so dang many tribesmen hogging the water?

Ok, John, since you paid off yer emoji to cry tears.. Ah'll take pity and post yer pic fer ya!  Ain't that nice...wink

Another quiet week??on the site. And as becoming usual, I am belatedly wishing all the August-oids a very Happy Birthday.

Here in the Great Land things have slowed down after closing the 'subsistence' fishery. Mornings are in the low forties and we have had a bit of rain....so winter is coming. I have about another month and then off to the south fortyeight (or outside as we say). If I get a bit of ambition, the silvers are starting to run up the river.

Rex - the original Gibson's was on West Second along about Penn or Kty, on the South side of the street.  I can't really remember exactly where now.  I participated in stocking and opening that store.  About two years later we moved it to S. Main, which  I also worked on.

Danny,

Wasn't aware of Gibson's on west 2nd. "When... you're right, your right". ~ Jack Nichoson (China Town).  I do believe the picture article of Gibson's was regarding the one at Del Norte Shopping Center 4500 block North Main.  You know, the orginal Mall... wink

I have zero recollection of Kessels in Roswell. My family was lucky enough to get transferred to Roswell in 1958 when I was in 8th grade. Maybe by then Kessels was closed and long gone? I did some googling and found the following if anyone is interested:

Published in Dallas Morning News on Sep. 23, 2003.

KESSEL, JULIAN, age 88, of Dallas, passed away on Sept. 21, 2003. He was born on January 19, 1915 in Birmingham, Alabama, the eldest son of Abe and Minnie Kessel. Attended Texas Technological College and the University of Texas. Moved to Roswell, New Mexico in 1937 and opened Kessels Variety Store. Married Helen Cohen in 1943 in Ft. Worth, Texas. Moved to Dallas in 1956. Joined the staff of Titche-Goettinger and later with Dillard's Department Store, until his retirement in the late 1980s. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Ronald Serber of Tyler, Texas and his son, Ted Kessel of Dallas, five grandchildren, Julie Sacks and husband Steven, Chicago, IL, Jeff Serber and wife, Cara, Plano, TX., Arthur David Kessel, Tyler, Cyan Camb and Sabra Kessel, of California, and two brothers, Bertram and Milton Kessel, Dallas. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, September 24th at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Dallas, Rabbi Gerald J. Klein officiating. Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice. Dignity Memorial Sparkman Hillcrest 7405 W. Northwest Hwy. Dallas (214) 363-5401

Anybody know where they were located and when they were in business?

Sharon Snelson (Dunn)

My uncle worked for Kessels as his first job in the mid-'40s. It was located mid-downtown Roswell on the East side of Main Street but I can't remember if it was the block in which the old Penneys or Anthonys was located.

I've been asked what was it like growing up as a military kid? Talked to John Allensworth about some stories I wrote about being a one, He said give it a shot. Some are long and hope they work. John Madden:

1-Germany here we come

Our Mom, brother and myself left NYC in late October 1954 on the USS Patch. It was also a troop carrier but we never saw them. It took about two weeks to cross the Atlantic Ocean. During that time we were in a hurricane and there was a major operation on a man.

We were on eating schedules and one time Mom hadn't made the correct time zone change so when we got there for breakfast the sign said our time was already eating and we couldn't get in. Mom got us something to eat out of vending machines. Shortly afterward a man showed up, asked us what we were doing there “so early?” Boy were we happy but full of junk.

The ocean was so rough they wet down table cloths so our plates wouldn’t slide around. We could see the waves hitting the ship as it rolled a side to side. Thrilling but scary.

Playing around, in our room, I, ten years of, pulled my, 3 year old, brother's legs out from under him

and he cut his head. Bleeding I took him to get help. Mom had been somewhere and when she got back we were gone. She followed a trail of blood to find us at an aid station.

Eleven stitches later he was alright so I got to live for another day.

My brother dressed up for Halloween on board. I didn’t remember where or when we docked, in Germany, but I understand it was Bremerhaven where Soldiers and family members arrived. At out time family members and military personnel were not allowed to travel together.

We road a train from there to Wiesbaden. Mom asked a man something and gave him some money, a German I think. Not knowing anything about the exchange rate. It was all the German money she had.

Boy Scouts are divided into councils and Germany is in the Transatlantic Council. My troop, I don’t remember the number, every Cub Scout pack, Boy Scout troop, and Explorer Post had/ still have identifying numbers.

Our troop camped with a German troop on a peninsula on the Rhein River. We played ”capture the flag” as well as sharing our cultures. They showed us how to put coins on the railroad tracks so they got ran over and flattened then try to find them. It was crazy fun. They also introduced us to Lemonada. It had a strange effect, kick to it. They grew up drinking ”Kinder bier” like we drank water, which I’ve learned was discussing. Lemonada kicked our innocent butts to the point we were very off balance. To the point, our Scout leaders became worried about our parent's reaction. We never heard anything about it but we never camped with that German scout troop again.

Parents!
