Fred Miller
Several posts back, we were telling bank jokes. I have one that is actually true, actually a prank that I pulled on my mentor, the president of the bank I worked at back in the early 80's, Jerry Talley.
Jerry had a habit of saying, when he was trying to figure out a way to get something done, "I think I'll just go sit on a stump, drink some Black Jack, and ponder upon it." Cannot count the number of times we heard that.
So one year, on Sept.1 for his birthday, I planned a little surprise. Late the night before, I snuck into the bank with a large oak stump on a dolly. I put it in the middle of his office, and put a bottle of Black Jack on top.
I was not going to be in the bank the next day because it was opening day of Dove season. So I had clued several people to bring cameras. Jerry came to work, saw the stump and had the biggest smile on his face as the cameras were snapping away.
It doesn't end there. I got one of the pictures, took to a friend of mine who blew it up into a 2' x 3' poster. As woodworking was a hobby of mine, I made a frame for it out of some old barn wood I had, complete with hammering in and removing bent 2" brad nails to create worm holes in the wood.
At the bank Christmas party that year, I presented it to him as a gift from his employees. He got a big kick out of it.
Over the past several days, and with the help of his daughter, I finally got a copy of the picture.
