It is not a current picture, but was very much alive in '62, and it is not the Immanuel Lutheran Church.  Is this a stumper, do I get 3 pts?

Bill Leggett

John it looks like the back of the church

Billy Turley

Ok John, time for the Old Sage to  share some of his wisdom with us lost neophytes, cretins, nabobs and grumpy old men. Assuming that you can answer the questions you can have the 3 points.

One or all of the above !!devil

David Holdridge got it correct in an email to me, it is the Chapel at Walker AFB, it was on the east side.  However David, you got the name correct but the location and the significant event were missing so I'll have to take the awarding of points to the select committee on investigating points.  After further consideration you are awarded 1 point.

New pic will be posted soon.

Billy, how can you doubt for one second that I wouldn't know the answer. Ha!

Billy Turley

Ah John, Never doubted for a second that you didn't know the answer. Anybody who can teach knot tying, left handed threads and spare tire changing to Weathers and Rex has an abundance of useful knowledge !! (unlike my case where there is an over abundance of useless information)

What is signfiant about it? Or how ever you spell it.........you have to get close enough for spell check to recoginize the word. ha ha

True, True,  the left handed knot tying trick worked like a charm at last year's Gathering in Ruidoso.  All one had to do was make one of those 18 inch leaders (as per Old Sage's Fishing Clinic)  and Voilà !!  Fish were jumpin' 'n da cotton was high...  Turley fell asleep at Grindstone Lake and missed the action. Tommy Felber got jealous of my fishin' prowess and tore my 20 dollar bill prize money in half (accidently on purpose)  Felber did do a good job cooking the rainbow trout for me, so he ain't all bad. Tommy Weathers sat down next to me and asked for piece so I shared the trophy fish with him.

Yummy!

Turley,  don't use the green ABC  "speel cheeker"...  see what happens!

Opened as the Princess Theatre opened on July 28, 1913. It was later renamed Liberty Theatre. By 1941 it had been renamed Pecos Theatre.

The Runaway.” On this photo is the caption, “Previously The Liberty,” The Liberty, labeled 1919, with posters for “The Shepherd of the Hills,” a 1919 release, and a poster for a matinee of “When a Man loves” starring Earle Williams, also 1919. So it can’t have been The Liberty first.

Interesting design note: The Princess Theater seems to have as its emblem a painting of a Native American princess (although the poor imaging makes this speculative), while The Liberty flaunts a rather large replica of The Statue of Liberty

Both photos show a fancy arched facade (mixed Greek, Roman, and perhaps Arab and/or Rococo elements of design). The Princess has a plain architrave above the fancy arch, but the Liberty has nude fairy and Cupid scultures and other ornaments on the architrave.

The Princess' sign (which looks as if it might contain small light-bulbs within each letter) is on the architrave, while the Liberty’s sign and statue are on top of the flat-roofed building. A strip of fancy ornament above the Prncess' sign has been replaced in the Liberty pic by a plain stretch of masonry or plaster

John,

Glad to see the "other" Billy Ray profiled, I could write tons of good stuff bout Billy Ward. But I will just say "He is my friend " !!!!! and a good friend to all.

I will say that Ward is the third best basketball shooter (of the caucasian persuasion) I have ever seen. Behind Jerry West and Tommy Clark. He would be the 4th but I never saw Larry Bird in person.

So there.!!!!

John you continue to amaze with your efforts on the site.yesyesyes

Can't wait for the Gatheringdevil ( I will be posting another announcement in the very near future)

Bill Legget...... I am in awe. All along I thought architrave wuz a dirty word, and a big one at that! Of course, 40 years in the oilfield and the biggest word I ever knew was applesauce. I just called them mashed apples until I learned that one....surprise

John Allensworth

Wow is right Bill L.  I was sure glad someone knew what and where about the Princess, all I had was the picture.  Definitely 3 pts. for you.

Next pic will be posted soon.

Thanks Billy T., and I agree with you Ward is a great friend.  One of the things that always amazed me about his shooting, he was so darn little and skinny, a guy like that shouldn't be able to shoot the eyes out like he did.

John L., do we need to put a limit on the size of the words, haha!

John L.

I too found Bill L's use of the word "architrave" somewhat suspect being one of those second year two dollar college words... However, the eloquent trivia posted by Foghorn Leggett on the "Princess Theatre" appears to have been lifted (borrowed) instead from the comments made by Robert Patrick (rbrtptrck) on July 5, 2008 at 4:37 pm at the web site below.

Here you will find the word "architrave"   in the fourth paragraph second sentence.... including other paragraphs posted to impress the lumberjacks and rich aunts...

Bill L.  if you are gonna borrow someone else's words, be sure to include the source, otherwise it could be easily misconstrued as plagiarism.    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plagiarism

I guess your post has done some good. Already has Rex going to 3 different sites......and John L. has broadened his vocabulary. Keep up the good work !!

Turley,

I figured you'd appreciate the research put into it.  It was done not only for your beneifit but for those who appreciate wisdom in the philosophies of Brother Dave Gardner's "Little David"... the first Rock 'n Roll artist...  When little David wound up his slingshot, he hit the giant in the 'haid' with a flat slippery river rock,  Little David rocked him and then rolled him (took his coin purse)

That Dear Hearts was the first rock'n roll concert ever sponsored by Bill Graham...

Billy Turley

Damn I understand that and that scares me. Alot.

04/14/14 11:24 AM #985

John Landess

I wuz scared alot too, but only half as much as Billy.

I am glad that Rex has the time to do such investigative research. In fact, I think that is really supercalifragilisticexpialidocious !!

Now, for my research vis a vis cherry newtons. First thing that I found is that is the name of a cookie. Second, there does not appear to be any info on it as a soda/drink/fountain drink. Maybe Grannie just invented and named it??

So time to do lab work (at Sonic). Following the idea of Harvey's for chocolate, and tests by Pat and Danny Cathey, I ordered a cherry chocolate coke. It was overly chocolaty (ended up with a 1/4 inch of sludge in the bottom). I sipped a little then had them put some milk in. Still too much chocolate, but seemed to be on track. Then I thought, maybe we are all over doing it, and spending too much time at Sonic, though their pickleos are great, so I stopped at the store, picked up a six pack of Cherry Coke, a small bottle of chocolate milk, and one of Yoo-Hoo. The cherry coke with some Yoo-Hoo in it was ok, but not it. However, when mixing some chocolate milk in, that seemed to be  much more like it, but still a little chocolaty, so I added a dollop of fresh milk and that wuz good!

Now it has been 50 plus years since I last had a Greer's Cherry Newton, and my taste buds may have been tainted by snake bite antidote and other sordid things, so I hope that some of you might try the above and give your opinions..

04/14/14 12:37 PM #986

John Allensworth

Now as I remember it, Jack Hankins and I would go to Greers and order a Cherry Newton and add the mystery ingredient, one half of a pint of cherry flavored vodka, no wonder those Cherry Newtons were so good.  It was Jacks idea!!

I agree with Turley, you guys have to tone down the use of those 2nd semester words.

Rex Booth

Johnny,  ask  John L  for his explanation  of "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious"...  Landress, if  it walks, talks, and crawls on it's belly like a reptile... it must be Little Egypt.

Then again, it probably contains other ingredients besides Cherry Voda, Moonshine, or Turley's favorite snakebite antidote Hiram Walker Peach  Brandy...

04/14/14 01:47 PM #988

John Landess

I am sorry Billy, but Rex has summoned my expertise....

"Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious", The roots of the word have been defined as follows: super- "above", cali- "beauty", fragilistic- "delicate", expiali- "to atone", and -docious "educable", with the sum of these parts signifying roughly "Atoning for educability through delicate beauty."

According to the film 'Mary Poppins', it is defined as "something to say when you have nothing to say".

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious was first added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 1986 and, as of March 2014, still does not appear in the Merriam-Webster dictionary."

Ms.Poppins says, "You know, you can say it backwards, which is 'dociousaliexpilisticfragicalirupes', but that's going a bit too far, don't you think?"  And I have to agree!!!!!!!!!!!!

John L ,

You missed your calling.

With your knowledge of BS, you could have taught HIgh English at a Low High School in Roswell and hung out with Merlin the Magician.  Of course you'd be the designated drinker and score keeper during Old Sage's basketball games....

Mary Poppins... ?  The kiddie needs professional help.  wink
