Right, but I can't attach it to someone else's post.  Thanks, though, Rex.

Friday nights:  endlessly dragging Main and 2nd, seeing and being seen.  Just great.

If any of you could go back to 1961 - 1962......and look and be like you were then.....but only for 24 hours.............would you...??   What would you do......??

(This is kind of like a Twilight Zone thing.....)

 I

I would love that trip. See my mom and dad and all our friends the way they were back then.

A Trip Back... hmmm.   Let's pose a question to Michael J. Fox:  "Wouldn't you 'first' have to go 'forward' into the past... to go 'back' to the future" ?

Charline,  you can give a thumbs up on separate post and we'd get it.  I for one am damn glad this RHS site is not Face Plant.

Bob,

Turley and I and the whole RHS class appreciate your nice offer for the Shrimp dinners.  Yummy!  Bet the Gulf Shrimp you have near Tampa Bay are huge compared to the ones Jack Chew Den served.  I seem to recall you're asking price for a AAA membership was around 19.95  back in the day.  Today's prices are 79.00 for a standard and 105.00 for premium (200 mile tow).   Come to think, 19.95 was a lot of money in 1962.  How did those Ese's at La Bonita come up with the dinero for their policies...?  ha

Oh Man....I had forgotten about the butterfly shrimp at Chew Den.  They were to die for.

Jack and Suzie Chew were my heroes.....!!

Sorry guys there ain't no more Chew Den.

There is Chew's West out on West Second run by the family but it is more of a buffett. Jack and his wife run the gift shop next door. I talked to him last year and he is still spicty and spry and wanting to promote Roswell. After all these years he still can't say my name....calls me Tully. There was a good article about him in the paper a year or so ago. Rex might still have it.

That's funny. My first thought was that I would love to go to Chew Den and have butterfly shrimp or shrimp fried rice or sweet and sour pork. In all my travels I have never found any better Chinese food.

Dr. Baurber used to have a poker party at his house once week with some of the leading citizen of Roswell and one of the players was Jack Chew.  A bunch of us guys used to time the poker party to go visit Johnny.  Mr Chew would always ask if we were playing footbal and of course we would say yes and then he would ask if we were hungry and we said YES.  He would get on the phone and a short time later boxes of fried shrimp, fried chicken and best of all onion rings.  Like Marylyn, I have tried onion all over and none beat Chew Den.

I was still eating them until a few years ago.  Tony Llamas comes close, but not close enough.  Just talking about them makes me crave them.  I would have like to have seen the article on Mr. Chew.  He has to be about a 110 years old.  A very gracious man who loved RHS athletes.

All this talk of Jack Chew's Chinese food naturally turns my thoughts to the best Mexican food one could eat in Roswell or anywhere else for that matter. That would be Mrs Arias Mexican Restaurant on South Main St. A tiny place, just a few tables but they served authentic mexican food, the real deal, not the watered down tex mex crap most places serve today. The soapapillas served at the end were a special treat. Just bite off the tip, fill with honey and enjoy. Mrs Arias closed down quite a few years ago, what a shame. The closest I've come to that quality mexican food in recent times is a small mexican place on the west side of Capitan, NM. Can't recall the name but their green chile stew is out of this world.

Ray, it's the El Paisano in Capitan.  My daughter worked there in high school.  It's owned by the Otero family.

Congrats to Steve for the award......Roswell's loss will be Amarillo's gain (think that's where they're moving). I'll miss his column in the RDR....was always informative.

It was a great article about Steve in the paper!!  He will be missed in Roswell but I know his kids will love having him in Amarillo!!!

Happy Birthday Kay Schrimsher Shields!!!  What a great time we had in high school and don't you dare say what WE did on Friday nights!!wink  Hope you have a great day!!!!!

07/17/16 04:35 PM #3336

Rex, actually, I think CCR's song is about a Susie Cue.....just sayin'.....

Gilmore, I vaguely remember a place called Scotty's BBQ....or something similar..

FRED Scotty's BBQ was on west 2nd just pass Pop's drive in the one with the foot long hot dogs yes

When Scotty moved to west 2nd st. my dad and Scotty were partners. My dad bought Scotty out around 1963. I became owner of Scottys sometime around 1970 and ran it until I retired eight years ago. Real Bar-B - Que is hard to find. Black Betty has a good beef sandwitch but it is not as good as Scottys. If they can't show me the fire wood I can't call what they sell BBQ.

John, I really liked Mr. Maxwell. He taught me how to use a slide rule and you just don't how many times I pulled out the old slide rule to help me out. Not once. Mr. Maxwell was a cool guy.

Tommy, curious which kind of firewood you used to smoke the meats...??

Over here we use hickory and mesquite.....in a pinch, we will throw in some well seasoned oak, you would be surprised how well it works......
