Remember in the ‘50s  KSWS had only one TV channel?  When the station had problems which happened frequently, they would put up a sign that read “Please Standby”.  My grand dad, who loved to entertain his grand kids, would get up and stand next to the TV… sometimes for several minutes!!

Rex,

I was in 3rd grade when KSWS came on (1953). We were living in a little farm house out of town at the time. All the business folks started trying to sell TV's with deals like: try them for 30 days before buying. My old man tried everyone's, before finally buying one at Bill Deans...(the tire place?) It was a Trav-ler, and I was not the remote, or anything else, as I was not to touch it. Of course I cheated, and one evening he and my mom got home a little early, he felt the top of the TV which was still warm. Then I got warmed up!

Later, about 1955, they started showing programs starting about 3pm for the "kiddies"... I remember Radio Patrol, Tailspin Tommy, Charley Chan, Flash Gordon, and many others, and later Sky King, and the Cisco Kid.  It wasn't until I was older that I found many of the early ones were old Saturday Movie Matinee serials from my folks time. They were still great, and I wanted to be a pilot like Tailspin Tommy, always landing somewhere and saving someone, usually a girl. I wonder if he ever got the mail delivered though..

BTW, as I remember it, that TV cost around $200 then ($1850 today), and my Mom made payments on it for a couple of years. Also, anybody remember Howdy Doody?? and did anyone from out west like itcheeky

Rex,

Looking at all the interest in this subject, you and I must have been the lone boob-tube aficionados.

If I had but known that I would end up in the 'Great White North', I would have paid more attention to Sgt. Preston. As it turned out, my younger brother and I ended up with two malmute pups in 1961, his named Turk and mine named King!!! Go figurefrown

Happy New Year to all!

Speaking of KSWS TV I remember a Roswell real estate guy from the late 50’s that made his own commercials and ran them on TV. His tag line at the end of each commercial was “Just remember folks, there will always be more people but there will never be more land”. I recall him getting it backward once (never more people but always more land).

Anybody remember the name of that guy and his company??.  I don’t!

Hey Ray,

How are you doing, still going skiing and all??

I thought the guy was Wayne Adams, but someone else said a while back, it was another realtor..

Glad to see that some one else is still getting that good Shell stay at home money!laugh

Ray and John, it was Wayne Adams who said "there will always be more people but there will never be more land"..  I play pickleball with his daughter, Kathleen.

Hello John  and Pat. Thanks for the info. What was the name of Wayne Adams real estate company? Was Larry Adams (RHS class of ’62) part of that family? I think Larry’s mother was a real estate sales lady. Larry and I were neighbors when his family lived across from RHS and mine lived a couple blocks north on Fulkerson Dr.

Yes John, I still ski some. My wife, grandson and I leave for Breckenridge Colo in March for our annual spring break trip. Well, I said ski “some”, but in reality, I spend much more time around the fireplace with a cold beer than on the slopes. Recurring lower back problems have slowed me down a bit. Ain’t getting old fun?? My grandson, Kai, does most of the skiing. My wife and I have raised Kai since he was 13 months old. He’s now 16 years old.  Wow, time flies!

Pat, what on earth is “picketball”?? Anything like croquet?

01/11/19 08:26 PM #5252

Pat Sullins (Carpenter)

Ray, I think it was called "Wayne Adams Real Estate".  I don't know if Larry was related but Wayne Adams lived out on the old Dexter Highway.  PickLeball is a game somewhat like tennis but with a smaller court and smaller racquets. It's easier on older people because it is smaller and can be played indoors. I think it was named after someone's dog....at least that's the story I heard. We play at the First Nazarene Church and at the Roswell Adult Center. The ball is plastic about 3" in diameter and has holes in it.  Loads of fun and we play as teams of two.

Hi Pat,

Wow, small world as they say.. So you play pickleball with Kathleen at the Nazarene Church. Back in the day, I attended there, along with Roy McKay and Mike Ingram, and the Round's (Allen and Gene). I had a secret crush on her, but she was an "older" woman (RHS '61), and when she got a new Corvair to drive, I knew she was way out of my league, ha!!!! I do remember going to a halloween party at the Adam's home in 1960 and that was a real treat. I think I rode out with Roy in his brand new black Chevy Impala.... another wow!

Ray, raising grandchildren is a real eye-opener, but keeps you young! I raised one from 23 months, and she is now 36.... Time flys indeed!cheeky

As to back problems, I have found using an inversion table to be really helpful, plus it makes you taller ;)
