I don't think Larry Adams was related to the Adam's real estate company. I lived on the same block with Larry when we lived on Stanton before he moved across from the high school. His Dad worked for an electric co. and his mother did sell real estate but I don't know who she worked for.

'Wiffle Ball' Tennis.    Wiffle ball was a great warm-up before our baseball games.

Thanks for the pickleball info and video it looks like a fun game for our type folks! I got into tennis in a big way in my mid 30’s and played 2 or 3 times per week for about 20 years before giving up on it. Pickleball looks like a good alternative.

Pat, is the Roswell Adult Center located where the Youth Center used to be in the late ‘50’s? If yes, I guess that’s an example of the proverbial “Circle of Life”!  I’ve got lots of good memories of Fri & Sat nights spent at the Youth Center while attending North Junior High School in the 8th and 9th grade. In those days my family lived on N Lea Street about a 1 minute walk to North JHS and 5 minutes to the Youth Center.

John L, I’m going to try that back inverter thingy. I’ve seen commercials on TV and I think it’s called a “teeter” or something like that. Yep, raising a teen is a real trip. My 16 yr old grandson just got his drivers license. Can’t wait to get the new car insurance bill (Jeez!)

One last thing suitable for the “Who Cares Dept” : I lived on Fulkerson Dr, a couple of blocks South of RHS during our RHS years. In those days you could almost rename Fulkerson Dr “RHS class of ‘62 drive” IE: the house immediately to the left of mine was occupied by Tommy Taylor, immediately next door to Tommy was Pam Harris, directly across the street was Verlon Miller, a couple of houses down from Verlon was Fran Bunderle and down near the end of our block was Vera Spurrier. Don’t think Vera was part of RHS class of ’62 though. Kind of weird, all those classmates living so close together and I don’t even recall one middle of the night raucous party. Our parents must not have travelled too much back then!

Yes, Ray, the old youth center is what is now called (I think..... because they change the name pretty often!!) the Roswell Recreation Center. It was the Roswell Adult Center and, before that, The Roswell Adult and Senior Center! They tore down the Yucca Center (old South Jr. High) so, now, the kids are coming to the RRC.  A new recreation center has been built on West College to the tune of about $20 million and should open soon.  I understand it will have an indoor and outdoor pool. I don't know if it will be mainly for the kids or if us old folks will do our dancing and other stuff there!

Sad to hear that they tore down South Junior High. That was my introduction to "higher" education! Being as that was once the original Roswell High School, one would have thought, that they might have tried to save at least the original front facade. It was really neat, looking much like some of NMMI.

Wallyball is another indoor "activity" (good for winter). They started an association several years ago in Alaska at the local sports center. Several of my fellow employees started a team. I went once and 'decided not for me'. Basically, it was volley ball in a smaller area (raquetball court) and you  play off the walls also!!  It gets a bit wild, think I will stick to minature golf!!!

There have been many changes in Roswell but in the end, it is still home. Our roots are there.

The Youth Center was one of my favorite places.  I loved playing tennis.  Saturday mornings were spent playing baseball.  My Dad was the overseer of the weekend sports.

I remember learning and completing many wood crafts there also.

My Mother used to say get out of the house and go to the Youth Center.  I remember this little short girl dancer and I fell in love with her.  Her name was Linda Lepard and I stll love her..  Played many a hot and competive game of basket ball there.  I even played tennis against Miss Purdy

Used to love halloween there.  I think they gave  a silver dollar  to two boys that would get in the ring and box.  Roy Allen and I would beat the devil out of each other for that money and then go look for another guy to get in the ring._

The Youth Center, unfortunately one more fun thing I missed out on. Always having an after school job certainly cut into my free time. crying

BTW, did everyone watch the premier episode of 'ROSWELL, NEW MEXICO' last night? I am wondering whom the characters may have been based on.... humm, I do remember one family that was pretty strange, but I am not mentioning any names...YET!!!

Some real swell times at the Youth Center.  Especially dances on Friday or Saturday nights. During our 9th grade year at North Jr, Linda Dumas walked up and asked me to dance.  Well me being a shy southern gentleman, it only took me a nano-second to accept her gracious offer.  About 30 seconds into the slow-dance my back started hurting from bending over so much… so I reached down, grabbed her by the waist, and put her feet on top of my size 14’s and we whirled around the room!  Could have danced all night!  Others, 'should' have danced all night...  laugh

The new TV show "Roswell" started last night for those of you who are still looking for some of your out of this world relatives.

Thanks to Connie Swanson for sharing this information with us.

"Roswell New Mexico"

Channel 21  CW / KWBQ  Tuesdays at 8 PM  - Also showing again this Thursday 17th... for those trying to locate relatives who were abducted and are aimlessly walking in the desert near Van Horn, Texas...

I don’t remember going to dances inside the Youth Center.  There were a few times in high school when I danced outside the Youth Center.  Several times when double dating, we’d park the car, turn up the radio, open the door and dance on the tennis courts!  It was great fun!  Hope we didn’t harm the tennis courts, Fred!  Later when it became the adult center, my mother took painting lessons there.  Looks like many of us made good use of the center, and enjoyed our time there!

Saundra, since much of this series was filmed in and Around Santa Fe perhaps some lost relatives could be found
Up here. None in my neighborhood have been sighted!

Well, "Roswell" certainly started off with a lot of action!

I'm still not mentioning any names, but Rex seems awfully well informed about abductees and where they were deposited in Texas...........hmmmmmmmmmmmm

Saundra Bennett (Whiteside)

I watched  “Roswell, New Mexico” last night, and have to say I was disappointed.  You could tell it wasn’t filmed in Roswell.  I had difficulty identifying anything Roswell.  It seemed to me that our hometown was stereotyped and Hollywoodized.  Crashdown Cafe?  Come on!  Charline, you are better at this than me....what is your take?  Yeah, Rex, what is it you know about the abductees that we don’t?

01/18/19 01:42 PM #5271

Rex Booth

I agree with Saundra's assesment of the so-called Roswell series.  It has absolutely zero plot as it goes from one scene to the other with no apparent rhyme or reason.  This TV rip has nothing to do with the 1947 incident or purported gov'mint cover up.  The series is a cheap attempt using Roswell as the theme when in fact most filming is done in Santa Fe with a fake-studio cave... which is where the abductees are put in large rubbery cocoons... until dropped in the West Texas desert town of Van Horn.  El Juan ain't that where some of yer kin live... before the mother ship drops others off  in the hills of Tinny-see?

Fred Miller,

Happy Birthday!  Hope you're kicking yer heels up today!!  yes

Billy Dawson's country tune about New Mexico's "Enchanted Circle" which starts in Angel Fire, Eagle Nest, Taos, and Cimmaron.  Billy Dawson was born in Sunray, Texas and lived in Amarillo.

Check out Billy's catchy lyrics -  FULL Screen!

Rex,

I was pleased to see you had a similar reaction to the ‘Roswell’ series as me...and that I wasn’t the only one who didn’t like it. It is pretty bad!  Thank you, Music Man, for the Billy Dawson song about New Mexico.  I love it...makes me miss my home state!

Saundra and others I have to agree with you. Very poorly done and not worth wasting time over the "Roswell" series.

Brother Dave Gardner said:  "It all depends on how you look at it".  On the other hand, I wouldn't mind wasting a little time learning español with dark-haired Jeanine Mason...  cheeky

I agree with Saundra and Diane.  I thought it might be a research show to try to dig up some truths.....not a made-up, hokey love story among the sexes!!

I totally agree ths show Roswell stunk. When i saw the listing i thought it might be worth the shot. My apologies to all.

Connie,

Not to worry.  It's not a total loss.  At least I was able to check out hubba-hubba... dark-haired Jeanine Mason... devil

Soooo Pat,

You didn't agree with my agreeing with Saundra's assessment of them-thar 'Pecos Valley' Aliens...?   frown

Johnny,

Love yer 4-Wheeler!  What a cool crash helmet.  Like the one El Juan should have worn when he landed on his 'haid' mountain-biking to his 'stills in the hills' of Tinny-see.   Teacha Annee, now ain't dat a rahme...?
